You might have a point though I remember reading somewhere (no, don't have a clue where it was but I think on another political website) that Americans do tend to have adoring feelings for their flag that is not repeated in most nations.

It is fool hardy to think you can have only words. When the Union troops went into battle at Gettysburg they were carrying their symbol. The Confederates were also carrying theirs as well.

You say that if you show a small child a flag it will mean nothing to them. You are right. But read them the Gettysburg address and it will mean nothing to them as well. You have to explain both to them. Teach them what each means.

IIRC when George H.W. Bush claimed that when he was shot down in the Pacific in World War Two that he was thinking of the Bill of Rights people (from both parties) basically laughed at him.

I don't remember that (and can't find it online with a cursory Google search), but the idea of him thinking about the flag when he was shot down seems somewhat unlikely too.
