The ease of which one can discover details of another is not a factor, Google is not the arbitrator of what's fair to share on Wordforge.

Garamet self-identified on the board during Cass original administration, to the point that it was on the freakin' header to the forum she modded.

If she wanted to break from that, she could have retired the Garamet persona and started a new one.

She hasn't, so the fact that it's public knowledge ON THIS BOARD is what's key.

So are you planning on posting that you are Rauol the Redshirt on Wordforge in a major periodical?

If yes, then you will be held to the same standard as T'bonz is (which obviously she could care less about).

If not, then you have nothing to worry about.

A myspace page isn't quite the same level of circulation as the L.A. Times.

And it's certainly not the same when someone plays detective and uses personal clues to find your myspace page when you haven't posted your user name on Wordforge.

Again, you are still reading too much into it, and it is definitely not just about victimising Garamet.

The same rule about names applies to myself, Nick, Dan Leach, LindaR, Chris and others because we have revealed our real names to Wordforge so can't then turn around and say it is private information. In fact there is precedent for this when Ted decided he didn't want people using his name anymore but it was decided that couldn't be enforced as he had quite freely told everyone on the board his name.

Stop trying to draw legal lines in the sand, the rules are more a rough guideline and will generally fall on the side of supporting someones privacy.

I find that using someone's real name and resorting to insulting thier professional work in order to retaliate for thier political beliefs is repulsive. It is a lame and tacky troll and to me indicates that you've run out of points to debate people on the issues.

If someone were to use Google or some other means to track down yours or my real names through our work and they used that information here, they'd get a ban.

To put it this way: Because garamet had used her real name here and I know where she lives, I was able to find her street address with almost no effort at all.

Converserly, because you've never posted it or any other real "clues", I have no idea what your real name is or where you work (other than the city).

It's not that. It's respect. I know we have several members that are well published. Some that have a minor degree of fame. I choose not to look for them. If they wanted me to know, they would tell me.

When it comes to American citizens, the amount of dirt I could find on them is...immeasurable. Legal name, date of birth, telephone numbers, social security number, address of any and all homes, drivers license number, their vehicle's VIN numbers, their vehicles make, model, color, and tag numbers. Their full criminal histories. And, I can get the same info for their spouses and children and much, much more.

I choose not to look. I guess I think everyone else ought to do the same.

Kirk did tell us, showing clearly that his real name was no longer secret, and that he didn't desire it to be a secret. What is gained by pretending that we don't know what is posted on TrekBBS? It certainyl does not serve any privacy concerns whatsoever.

And if it were really about "respect", as you say, the bans would have started with those who used garamet's real name to troll her. So it isn't a rule to ensure respectful treatment of real names, nor should it be, since that's not what WF is for.

I didn't realize this was disputed. I didn't see it, nor did I see Cass use his name; but it seemed that everyone on any side of the debate agreed that Kirk posted his name with his pic on TrekBBS, and that that is where Cass got it from.

Doesn't matter one bit where she got it from. If he didn't give it up HERE, it doesn't get used HERE. Garamet gave up her RL info HERE, so it's wide open for use HERE.

He posted the picture a few years ago, for a very short time, at TBBS. When he realized he used a pic with his name in it he removed it. It was a stupid mistake.

I never saw it. I was told the name back when it happened by PM but in the time since I hadn't even remembered it.

Oh, now I remember it...I can't forget it since I saw it so many damn times editing it out of posts. It now is much more common knowledge than it was..and in all honesty...how many of you knew his name until this happened?

The funny thing is, people are usually very good about names here. For example, a couple years ago Tasvir and I were very adversarial and he went into a spate of calling me "Tracie" and since I didn't feel friendly toward him at the time, I asked him to please not use my name. You know what...he stopped doing it....oh we kept bickering but a quiet request took care of the issue....and went a long way to opening up the chance for us to get along later. (Hi Megatron! )

I don't know....it's just in my experience most people here are pretty reasonable if you give them an opportunity to be in a genuine manner.
