Here's a theory from someone in a Facebook group I'm in. I don't know that I agree (with anything that's been theorized by anyone, actually) but interesting at least.

Nope, "just some other guy", wouldn't have a personal grudge with Kirk.

Nothing requires Dr. Dehnar to be paired up with Gary Mitchell, nor Carol Marcus with Khan. Either could be a coincidence.

For that matter, we don't know for certain that either of them is anyone we saw in the original timeline. But since disinformation/incomplete information is all we have to go on, I'm sticking with it being the guy they tell us about in the comics... just like the last time, when it was the guy they told us about in the comics.

I still think it's quite obvious that Benedict Cumberbatch is either Shinzon, Archer, or the whale probe from Star Trek IV. :bailey:

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Don't think so. For a lot of the audience the backstory is already there from the previous stuff and for the newbies they just get to do a lot potentially drama-inducing scene setting around him being a someone from the past, responsible for terribel things, thought dead etc. I can see the scene where Spock is 'accessing' the old computer files now...

So is that Kirk and Cumberbatch running through the red jungle and jumping off the cliff?
If so, looks like a "flashback" scene, where the two work together...

I have it on good authority that BC is actually playing 2 surviving brothers who are avenging the death of their triplet.

Yes, BC is playing Larry and Perry Mitchell.

Actually, it was quintuplets -- but they're saving Harry and Terry for the next sequel.

BC is playing one of Kirk's old adversaries from TOS:

The thing looks more like a video game than it does a movie trailer. 'Batch is one hell of a good actor, and watching him chew scenery as a villain would be awesome. Abrams, however, flat out sucks when it comes to things like plot.

    Re: star trek:into darkness

Why, why, does the villain have to have a British accent? Isn't that ever going to reach a point where it's played out?

Why not give him a southern accent?

"Ah done come back for mah REE-venge, y'all." That could be scary!

In the Star Trek timeline, the South gets pretty heavily nuked. This man is the only southerner alive:

    This.

I was just commenting during the VGAs tonight how cool it would be to have a villain with a chav accent.

William Shatner COULD be in STxII as the OLDER Kirk Pine, DECADES in the future, recollecting & reflecting on his days as skipper of the 1701. Kind of like how Ru'afo recollected & reflected on his days knowing Mozart in "Amadeus".
