Why does the rest of the world get to see this before America? This is an American phenomenon!

I'm probably the first WFer stateside to have seen the movie, then. Just got out the theater ten minutes ago.

I'll type more when I get to my computer, but it's at least trying to have more sustance than the first. In spite of previous reservations, I liked it and will see it once it come out to my own base.

Saw it last wednesday. Great popcorn flick, just like the last one. I am not a hardcore Trekkie anymore, and therefore I am quite happy with a fast paced, entertaining action movie with some nice references for the fans. However, this is not a movie which will leave its marks in time. It's just fodder for the masses with a little Star Trek background.

For what it is - a blockbuster which should attract a huge audience - STid is a good movie. However, a little bit melancholy remains. For me, Star Trek has lost its "magic" after DS9.

    question regarding the mirror:

In the original, Spock acted out of cool logical necessity. he was at peace with the idea that the responsibility naturally fell to him.

I've been assuming that in this one Kirk is acting, instead, out of a direct need to shoulder the responsibility of having personally fucked up.

Is this a correct assumption? If so, for me at least, THAT potentially changes the emotional feel of the scene even if the dialogue is parroted somewhat.

regarding the international release, I've read that Star Trek movies historically don't have the legs overseas that other "tentpole" movies have had...perhaps that plays into this choice somehow.

Well, I preferred it to the first one.
It was a fun and enjoyable popcorn movie, not exactly good Trek, but I wasn't expecting that.

Reading the plot on Wikipedia, it doesn't do much for me, sadly. :(

I will see it, but probably not 5 times like I did the first one.

Just seen it....and I paid for it :(

Was in court today and was adjourned to 4:30. Cinema near by and I succumbed.

Suffice it to say it was awful. Will report in detail when I get home.

This movie is a true Trek fan's nightmare.

I really enjoyed it. I imagine the purists are not going to be keen on this and they may have a point but for me, this is how to bring Star Trek to the big screen nowadays. A proper space adventure, great special effects, good acting, an interesting villain, some emotional and comical moments, and just enough Star Trekky elements to satisfy the need to have some actual Star Trek that traditional fans of the series will recognise.
As a pure Trek movie it's weak - as a stand-alone sci-fi/fantasy/adventure movie takign heavy inspiration from Star Trek, it's bloody fantastic. 8/10

That sounds about right. It's also pretty much how I saw most of the Trek movies. They are a different animal from the TV show and should be designed accordingly. Really looking forward to Friday!

He probably means more along the lines of "false advertising", but still kind of a lame thing to say.

Saw it last night. In brief:

    - I don't think I enjoyed it as much as the first but probably only marginally. I don't think it had scenes to match the opening of the last one with Kirk's father (which I actually think is one of the finest scenes/sequences in any trek film)
    - in many ways they are very similar in the sense they are pretty much wham-bam action films with light humour thrown in to good effect
    - cast are still good, script not as good IMO.

And further thoughts for those who have seen it.

Overall... probably a B+ from me.

Awesome, which means in reality it's going to kick ass.

Just got back. What he^ said.

I think the film also suffers because of Zoe Saldana's rising star, where the plot would have been better served with Bones' presence in the majority of her scenes and Sulu's - complete with sword - in the closing action sequence.

I liked seeing more of Uhura's character (not so much Saldana's acting), but it's true that more Bones and Sulu would have been nice.

To this film's credit, there's far more Big Three Dynamic (tm) than the last one, as well as fewer Spock/Uruha scenes.

Don't know why, but I read that as "as well as fewer Spock with Tuba scenes."

I appreciate the diversity of opinions about STiD by those who've now seen it. Love or hate ST '09, or be in the middle, it was on FX tonight. Anyone else catch it? I still don't like it due to some things I find cringe-worthy, but at the same time it has some very cool parts & things about it.

Any Trek film would benefit from fewer Spock with Tuba scenes.

STiD will need a director's cut, with this scene redone using NuKirk and Skeezit or whatever the name is of Scotty's little buddy.

some interesting bits from an interview with Simon Pegg:

"I love that the ship the guys take down to Kronos belonged to Harry Mudd, which is a really nice little callback to the series. "

    .....

"It was a really fun thing to play that because it was a great example of a Captain in his infancy, and Kirk making the wrong decision. Kirk was awarded the Enterprise very young, and I think this film is all about the fact that he's not ready for it. "

    .....

" I think the "Darkness" in the film's title is all to do with Kirk's uncertainty. I think it's confusion, because there's a point where no one knows what to do. The Darkness in the movie is his lack of experience. It's not the type of Dark Knight sense of darkness, or even in Benedict [Cumberbatch's] character, it's more like, "What the fuck do I do now?" It's a real life Kobayashi Maru and he fails it. If it wasn't for the intervention of someone on the outside, then everybody on that ship would be dead. It's sheer dumb luck that he gets through, I think he learns a valuable lesson. "

    .....

    (speaking of Keenser)

"We called Deep Roy back and put him back in the make up and had him come aboard the ship, he's obviously a very talented engineer. He kind of operates as Scotty's conscience sometimes, because Scotty is often talking to himself. But it's not like he's Scrappy-Doo, he's just a non-human friend of Scotty. "

    ...................

That last is no big deal, I just loved the "Scrappy Doo" comparison.
