Having been a soldier, if I heard of a insurrgent or a regular army guy from the other side taking on 150 US soldiers on his own and winning, I'm going to think that dude has some big brass balls and I'd like to buy him a beer. That doesn't mean I won't go out of my way to kill the motherfucker, but I can appreciate some Big Damn Heroics, regardless of the uniform.

Well what about Korea? What was the South Koreans' crime? Because as far as I can tell, the only thing they did to prevoke a war was to be a peace-loving people who lacked any significant military, compared to the aggressive Communist North, which was heavily subsidized by Red China and the Soviet Union. :chris:

I'd go pour a 40 on the smoking crater where he'd been, after calling in a couple fast movers to drop 500 pounders on his pos. :shades:

Like ive said about the lead up to things and the difference between that and 'what do you do when the shit hits the fan'. At the time that actualy kicked off yeah, the south koreans deserved to defend themselves and be supported in that effort.
But why did they end up in that position? Global geo politics pushing icons of power around a global map, taking here and giving there. Both sides pushed and goaded and grabbed power wherever it could until stress points turned into actual conflict.
Yet again people end up having to go to war because of unintelligent diplomacy and macho powergrabbing bullshit

That is perhaps the most bullshit, copout answer I've heard in the history of this board. :cylon:

Give me specifics. Give me links. Show me ONE thing South Korea did that provoked the North to invade.

Uh south korea wasn't so much at fault, its obvious to anyone that north and south korea were pawns of the cold war.

Hmm. Link? Nope. Specifics? Not so much. Fuzzy-headed rhetoric? :techman:

OK. So what, exactly, did South Korea do that made them a "pawn of the cold war"? Democratically elect their politicians? Engage in free market capitalism?

No, either side was 'backed' by the cold war powers until war was inevitable.
Russia and then both them and China controlled North Koreas direction as a powerplay and the US and its allies controlled South Koreas direction in much the same way.
Korea just happened to be a perfect stage for this battle to play out. It could have happened anywhere from africa to south america, but as the dice rolled, Korea was chosen as a place for a major front for both sides to invest into

I don't know if we controlled them as much as simply supported them materially. Remember, there hadn't been an independent Korea since 1910 and the state of South Korea had only existed as a sovereign state for two years before the tanks rolled over the border.

Funny how some try to see moral equivalence between the West and the Soviets in both Korea and Vietnam, yet in both cases it was the communist state that was the agressor and invader.

A little off-topic, but when I was in Iraq I got to see what our fast-movers dropping bombs can do to a runway......much like Doctor Evil's description of a freshly shorn scrotum.....breathtaking.

You could literally climb down in and walk around in the crater - it was as big as my house! It took a team of engineers with heavy equipment a full weekend to fill and fix each crater (now called "bomb holes" by the Air Force). And we didn't blow the piss out of the entire runway, we just dropped bombs every few hundred yards so no jet would have enough runway to get enough speed to take off - brilliant!

And another cool move.....the Air Force dropped a bomb (probably 500 pounder, maybe 1,000) on the adjacent office of the air traffic control tower rather than the tower itself. That way the head honchos and their infrastructure were taken out, but we could safely use the tower (French built state-of-the-art) for our own air traffic controllers when we took over the airfield!

Yeah, it was a French built 80 foot (or so) tower with an elevator (non functional because of the war damage). They used French towers all over Iraq. Equipment came from Russia, France, pretty much everywhere.

We found air conditioners that had been blown hundreds of feet from bombing, wired them up in a tent and they worked great.

Just remember, Dan is the guy who thinks HE has failed to keep out of a bad situation if some drunk guy decides to punch him in the mouth for fun.

Didn't he say something like he'd be angry at himself for getting into that situation in the first place?

If someone beat him up at a bar, he'd first wonder why he was at the bar at all, then blame the puncher's father, then granddad for raising the guy wrong.
    :mystery:

It's extremely weird logic, and I'm not sure anyone else, besides Dan Leach, thinks in this way.

Hell, even I don't think that way.
If you're a drunk and you punch me in the face I'll just haul off and kick your Old Milwaukee drinking ass. I don't stand for that shit. I figure if I take you down you won't harm anyone else. My only mistake might be that I didn't kick your ass sooner. Oh, and that I was squeezing your girlfriend's ass.

With respect, this is the most laughable comment I've read from you yet. If the astonishing lack of confidence you display in relation to the female species, making changes in your life and being a father is anything to go by then I'd say that you're not the kind of character who could hold his own in a fight. I would expect that at the first hint of trouble you'd do an Arnold Rimmer and hide under the table.

Then you dont know me very well.
I was expelled from 2 schools for bullying and fighting.
I spent 4 years doing first boxing then judo then karate (up to green belt shotokan) including competition fighting (kumite, like on karate kid).
One of the reasons i hate fighting so much is i know im the kind of person who isnt very good at stopping when its over...

edit: oh and can i just add, i'd kick your fat arse from here back to cockneyville any day of the week ;) :techman:

True. I just go by the horseshit you talk on here.
Yeah at what age? You're in your thirties now and the other kids have tatoos, wear gold chains, drink beers and burt no?

Which means what? How is being good at a martial art an indicator that you would be cool as a cucumber in a real fight? I spent years looking a porn but it didn't mean I was an expert in sex when I lost my virginity......:diacanu:

How many fights have you been in as an adult that has taught you this?
    Um, yeah, ok....
