The following Build Orders have been received:

    Austria - Build Army Vienna
    Spain - Build Fleet Lisbon

Here is the map at the end of Fall 2004.

Spring 2005 Orders are suspended until the situation
    in Italy is resolved.

We will have to freeze the Italian units in place,
or get a committment from faisent or someone else
    to play Italy.

    Your comments appreciated.

Hey Cobalt - Faisent and I have been pretty slammed at work, due to shake ups at our employer. I'll see if I can reach him, but I haven't been able to the last couple of days.

I'll submit orders now, sorry for the inconvenience.

If we can not reach faisent and are unable to get a replacement (and, mind you, Italy's position isn't a "mercy" position - it's a four unit nation that should be able to put up a fight, and certainly has diplomatic options) then the "correct" way of handling it is simply declaring civil disorder. Now I know I am the person most likely to benefit from such a declaration, however, those are the rules. I don't want this to happen at all.

I suggest we give the situation two days - Italy hasn't been available for two weeks now. After that we should work on getting a replacement, and if none can be found in a week from now, we won't have a choice but to civ-dis the nation. For some "added resistance" we can state that any support order of a fixed position is automatically given and that any retreat is automatically played. However like I said this would be quite sad.

Does anyone have a replacement in mind?

Thanks Demiurge and Armalyte for your comments.

I think that we'll just have to move on.

Spring 2005 Orders are due Tuesday, September 25,
    at the regular time.

If anyone would like to play Diplomacy,
    please let us know.

If no orders are recieved for Italy,
the country will be in a state of civil disorder.
No further orders will be accepted.

If Italian units are dislodged they will be disbanded.

If units must be removed due to the loss of supply centers,
they will be disbanded in this order:

    Tunisia
    Ionian Sea
    Apulia
    Tuscany.

Here is a link to The Rules of Diplomacy (large PDF file).

Thanks to everyone for your patience.

As it turns out the leadership of Italy was facing all sorts of interesting legal issues; I'd thought the game was on hiatus for awhile and then - massively icky RL issues that have caused me to be away from the net for awhile.

Unfortunately they're probably *not* going to be changing anytime in the next few weeks. For mucking up the game I apologize; at least I can say it was unforseen. I'd suggest that you put things on hold for a week and locate a replacement for me - I doubt I could give the right attention for at least another week or two.

Sorry all, RL throws curves from time to time...

I don't mind delaying for a couple of weeks if need be. I have performance reviews coming up at work, which means I probably should do some...

One nation forced into civil disorder in a 5-player variant would ruin the game.

If faisent is unable to continue, and I do believe that's the geist of it, we dearly need a replacement player.

BTW, I may be without 'net access from 09/30/07. I'm looking into it at the moment.

As much as I love a dead France, this really does break the mechanics of the game.

He said he's busy, what say you all of trying a new game? I mean, if we continue to have NOI's.

Several people mentioned they were interested, but we'd already settled on five players.

That might be a good idea.

If you'd all like to send concessions in with your next orders, we can start the new game asap. :diacanu:

I agree that we simply cannot keep receiving NMRs.

I'm fine with continuing the game as the NMR by France is not game-breaking but at the same time, I would be fine with restarting.

NMRs might be a nature of the game but this is taking it too far. At the same time we've spent a couple of months organising and playing this installment as of now. And at least Nick is active.

If we are to continue this game we need a replacement for the French position. I also believe that if we are to find a replacement such a replacement needs to be found before the retreat order.

I've managed to find a replacement player myself if the game chooses to accept him. Otherwise he'd be happy to join a new game.

    What say we all?

I would like to start over.
That way, everyone would have a fair chance.

    I would like to alter the map;
by adding a new column of provinces on the East side,
and moving a supply center from Serbia to Bulgaria.

This will make the game more challenging for Austria,
    and give Italy more leverage.

So. Do you want to play?

Do you want to keep the same country,
    or take a different country?

If we were to start over I'd prefer a new map altogether and for everyone to notify interest in the thread; thus we could know how many players we can be counting on.

The new map you are proposing is slightly more cumbersome than the last one, which tended to be a little slow.

With the two adjacent supply centers of Austria/Italy I can't agree that Austria's position was overpowered in the last map, while I agree Italy was weak. However, Italy's position is always weak in any game. The most enviable position on the played version map is Germany.

I would much prefer a standard version or one that is thoroughly tested and supported by jDip or Realpolitik. For five players I'd suggest Ancient Mediterranean.

I think we should be able to get seven players for a new game.

Since there are no new orders, the game is finished?

Very well, let's find players and a new map, then start a new thread.

The games I have suggested are multiplayer and don't have the annoyances of missed orders that Diplomacy has.
