Seems to me that Lucas wants Star Wars to become like the Star Trek franchise, something that roles on forever well past his involvement, much like Roddenberry.

I must admit to being incredulous at this annoucement, but I am actually very excited. If Lucas keeps his involvement to a minimum then quite possibly we will finally have a new Star Wars movie worthy of the OT.

    Bering back Mark Hamill!

So Disney now owns Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm??

Does this mean we might get a Joss Whedon Star Wars movie?

There are plenty of stories left to tell so this seems like a good idea.

George fucked up the prequels but other creators have done great things with the property outside of the live action movies.

    Zahn's Star Wars novels
    New Jedi Order novels
    Dark Horse comics
    Clone Wars cartoon
    various PC and console games
    etc.

Disney could pick from any of those stories or even go in entirely new directions. There are plenty of unexplored eras to explore, not necessary to focus on Luke, Han, and Leia...

Although this does leave the status of current projects in question. The Clone Wars series is airing on Cartoon Network which is affiliated with WB/DC Comics. Will it get cancelled?

And Dark Horse will most likely lose the Star Wars license and Marvel will take over Star Wars comics once again.

Whatever they do with Episode VII, just keep George Lucas away from it. Kick him upstairs like they did with senile Roddenberry and let some good writers take over.

My browser I'm using is fucked up, or I'd rep this. Add to the fact that Lucas is known for not being an actor's director (IE, directing every single inflection, hand motion, ect in a scene versus allowing the actor to interpret aanything for himself)....yeah. The guy has control issues like whoa. I doubt he'd turn over the franchise just for the sake of flipping the bird to [-]his[/-] Star Wars fans for any amount of cash.

Chances are good that he's been blowing money like MC Hammer or he'll be dead in a year. :bergman:

Point of order: Disneyland already has a Star Wars ride, since the 80s, iirc: Star Tours.

As long as they keep Lucas away from the Directors chair they will be okay.

Something else that occurred to me was that a few years ago Lucas announced that he'd arranged it so that when he died, nobody could do anything with the Star Wars universe. They could re-release stuff, but no one would be able to do any new projects. So no matter what, this is a complete 180 degree turn from his previous statements.

Oh, I agree, that as far as "Fuck you!"s go, it's epic. It doesn't change the fact that Lucas can be a first class dick.

Speculation on George Lucas accepting $4 Billion for Lucasfilm needn't be limited to tabloid motivations. It sounds like a great retirement plan, take in billions and establish an emeritus position of sorts for all future projects.

He's been making it up as he's gone along since the very start.

The original was Episode I. Then it was Episode IV and he had planned prequels.
He had planned three trilogies, and then he planned only two.
There would be no more, and now there will be.

Hell, it's even apparent that he changed the background story significantly between SW and ESB. He changed the Emperor from a figurehead into The Big Bad. And he changed Vader into Luke's father.
Then he pulled the Luke/Leia sibling thing out of his ass for RoTJ. And I won't even start on the prequels.

He's a hack who got lucky.

That's going a bit too far. Lucas is good when he's surrounded by talented people who can tell him when he's wrong.

When he's surrounded by ass-kissing yes-people, you get shit like Howard the Duck and the prequel trilogy.

That was the problem, after TESB cemented his place in cinematic history, his ego could no longer be contained. Gary Kurtz, the producer on the first two Star Wars films and the man responsible for telling Lucas to STFU and do as he was told, was out the door. Lucas then quickly surrounded himself with yes-men who were paid good money to kiss his ass day and night.

I'm cautiously optmistic. They managed to keep Marvel as Marvel in all the ways it was great, and make it better in those aspects of professionalism where it wasn't yet. If they can do the same to Lucas' stuff, Star Wars 7 will be to Phantom Menace as The Avengers are to the most recent Spider-Man, and --

Sorry, that last thought just sent me into euphoric delirium. Damn caution, I love this news.
