You joke, but since Howard's a Marvel property and Lucasfilm is now, odds are, Disney now has all the rights. Shit! Do you think that George called Disney and said, "Buy me, or I put out an uber-deluxe version of Howard?"

I may not be a fan of George Lucas but the man is no hack. You may not like him but one doesn't get to where he is in life by being a hack. Hacks don't make it as far as he has.

Compared to a couple Euro's in this thread the man is a fucking genius.

Lucas has, in my opinion, lost a lot of the vision he had when he was younger. Either that or in his early days there were others who had a more active hand in shaping his vision.

But, yes, he's still someone who's had tremendous influence on film and will always be remembered as the creator and director of one of the most culturally impactful movies ever.

Pixar were brilliant before Disney acquired them, don't think Mickey and Walt can take much credit for the stuff Pixar continues to churn out. Pixar would be hugely successful with or without Disney.

I can think of several other very rich and famous movie-makers who are also hacks. Popularity itself is no measure of his talent.

I agree that popularity in and of itself is no guarantee.

But Lucas' impact on the culture is undeniable. It's a rare person in this country who was alive in 1977 that doesn't know all about Star Wars. Even among people who weren't born them, the characters from Star Wars are immediately recognizable to a great many of them. With the prequels, younger audiences have really discovered the pheneomenon. And this acquisition by Disney means that future generations will, too...

It's not just Star Wars. Lucas influence in Hollywood is tremendous.

I think it was posted here a poster showing how Lucas influenced Hollywood from the technical side of special effects and stuff like that.

Gungans live 'til 1000, and the story of the first six is being told by deathbed Jar-Jar, and when the story is finished, Luke's great-great-a-jillion times-grandson snaps his neck in righteous revulsion.

The Clone Wars show is actually pretty awesome. I thought it would be horrible (and it didn't help that the pilot was released as a theatrical film) but it is far better than the prequel movies.

Anakin Skywalker is actually a likable and heroic character in the series and not the whiny emo douchebag portrayed by Hayden Christianson. And his padawan, Ahsoka, is pretty cool.

So new Star Wars can be done well given the right writers and producers. Stick Lucas in some honorary consultant position and let's see what other ideas people can come up!

Even if they don't follow the plot from the novels or comics, it might be cool to see some expanded universe characters show up in the new movie... like Mara Jade or Grand Admiral Thrawn.

I'd actually prefer to see a movie set in the Old Republic/Sith Empire era. That might be more interesting than the post-RotJ era.

Lucas sells his studio and loses creative control of the Star Wars franchise.

He probably won't be able [-]remaster[/-] fuck up the previously released films anymore.

We get new episodes that Lucas has nothing to do with.

Disney owns The Avengers and that was an awesome film. Maybe they'll be able to do some good things with the sequels.

Hopefully Disney is paying attention the the fans' gripes with what Lucas has screwed up.

I'm just not seeing the downside yet.

Mark Hamil is still alive and I don't see why he couldn't play an older Luke in the sequels. Obi Wan was an old man when we first met him in ANH. I don't see why that wouldn't work in an Episode VII.

The same is true, admittedly to a lesser extent, for much of what Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay have produced. Do you hold them in regard as well?

I'm glad they're not doing the Zahn trilogy, let's take it somewhere new, with the added benefit of less wrong font histrionics.

Not even close. Not even to a "lesser extent".

If you were any more off-base in that comparison, you'd be in the bleachers.

Ain't It Cool News has posted this very interesting rumor regarding Star Wars 7.

While I find the whole theory of the name of the project to be convoluted tripe, the points the author makes regarding the script and director makes a lot of sense. I would be totally on board for a new Star Wars film with the director mentioned. As for the writer, here's hoping the director and the new Lucasfilm brass iron that shit out so we don't have the issues that people worry about from him.

Gods No! Lindelof might be able to write grand-scale plots with lots of mysterious subplots to keep things interesting, but he can't finalize stuff worth a damn! See Lost and Prometheus as examples with TONS of unanswered questions. Fun to watch, but ultimately leaves the viewer frustrated as hell!

There are several franchises I want to see Disney stay well away from, but Star Wars isn't one of them. As long as they don't re-do the original trilogy and then saturate the market till the original versions are out of sight, I don't feel much concern about this.
