My answer is that I'm too old and cranky to even think about getting tied up any more, let alone risk taking a beating. Those days are 20 years, a bum shoulder, fucked up spine, and fusing pelvis behind me. Best bet for me and them is to avoid any confrontation to begin with. I'm gonna do everything possible to back down and deescalate. Last fight I almost got into was about 2 years ago. If things had gotten to that point I already swore that I was gonna end it as quickly and violently as I could and do shit that I wouldn't have considered doing in a bar fight 20 years ago.

Ummm......bad guys know how to fight dirty too. And if the bad guy weighs 250 and you weigh 180 and is 6 inches taller than you....could be a problem. And if the bad guy has four friends that can't wait to stomp your skinny ass into the dirt...could be trouble. I do know here in The South people kill one another at the drop of a hat, no hesitation.

see, I'm only 44 and in moderately good shape with over average experience. Top it off, I don't have much to risk except getting my ass handed to me. I'm used to being the one who intervenes to deescalate situations, but also able/prepared to do so forcibly. It's what me and my buds have done around here for years, and to a point, we still do.

    Yeah.....

A leather jacket.... Everyone has one of those at all times :dayton:

A belt? Have you seen people fight with their pants falling down? Very funny.

Of course for those who carry pulling off a belt is a no no since it automatically means our weapon and holster are no longer secure.

I think Turkey that you being in a couple of bar fights with a couple of drunk idiots has put into your head the notion that you're an expert on dealing with a knife. That you are a black belt in leather jackets and belts.....

You're not. And one of these days you're going to come up against someone whose going to put you down on the ground bleeding out.

The first rule of a knife fight? Don't get in a knife fight. Try to deescalate. Swallow your pride if you have too (even if you're in the right). If that doesn't work run. It's not worth it.

The second rule of a knife fight? Got a weapon that gives you distance? Fucking use it. If you can.

The third rule of a knife fight? If you can't do one and two and have no choice to fight then that's when you fight dirty and you go in understanding that you maybe be maimed for life or end up dead.

And no the guy with the bicycle is under no obligation to be the hero and try to contain the knife guy with his bike.

I'm almost 43 and my years in Uncle Sams Schools for Wayward Boys took its toll on me. Been where you are and the mileage to go with it. At this point I'm over it. To me it's a case of be polite, leave me the Fuck alone and I'll play nice. Leave me no option and, well it's your own damned fault. I ain't got the time nor inclination to get involved like I used to back in the dinosaur days.

I usually do. wht can I say, I'm a victim of fashion. Then again, I don't need a belt to hold my pants up anyways.

I don't carry. SHockingly, neither do most people out to get drunk.

    no.

Heh-I could tell you about the time I swung on a guy who turned out to be the LW kickboxing champion of quebec for three years running back in '89. I've lost plenty and been messed up more than once.

sometimes you don't have the option, others, it's your job description. I didn't work security at little places, and it was before a lot of the liablity legislation kicked in.

Gee, like a leather jacket or a bike lock?

    again, what I've been saying.

never said he was, jsut that that's what I would've gone to.

The worst is getting your ass handed to you? What part of people with knives/guns/buddies want to kill you and would think nothing of killing you is hard to grasp? You don't have the option of just "getting your ass handed to you" these days, at least not in my area. You will be beaten/shot into oblivion by a mob of people who hate you. People don't just "blow off steam" - they honestly want to see you dead or sent to the hospital.

He's Canadian. It's a different mindset from Americans.

Just go to WorldStarHipHop and watch the fight videos. When you go to the ground they still keep on attacking you. You almost never get a one on one fight anymore unless you've got buddies to hold back the other guys buddies.

All the while other idiots are holding camera phones screaming "Wordstar!"

Nah, our society's collective bloodlust knows no boundaries. We want death & destruction. It excites us, provides a vicarious thrill, breaks the monotony of the daily routine. Para-military police shooting first and asking questions never gives Joe Sixpack a sense of security.

what part of I don't wind up in that situation don't you grasp? We don't have roving gangs of feral hillbillies and gangstas going contract on old punks much around here. We did have the war with the skinheads back in the day-that went national and into some border states. There was also the summer we decided we didn't like some of the crack houses in the 'hood and started terrorizing the late night tourists as well as the dealers.

Of course, there's the darker side. A "suicide" in our circles a few years back raised questions, but none that couldn't be figured out by anyone with a lick of sense.

Now if some 250lb dude with a 1000 yard stare starts screaming at demons and waving a hammer? yeah, women, children, then I'm outta there jack.
99% of the time, I'm on my home ground. If some kid on the streetcar goes dippy and starts waving a jack knife, I'll hand him his ass more than likely. If you have the slightest clue how to fight with a knife, you can easily spot someone who isn't.

    Good.

But I would also like an explanation why no other cop at the scene stopped him after the first three shots and said "what the hell are you doing?" and stopped him.

I'm thinking a lot of other officers need serious discipline if not charges themselves.

Don't know, and frankly don't care, about the specifics of this case. But, I did want to address one thing.

    An excellent question.

When two officers are entering into a situation where lethal force may need to be used, the standard procedure is for one of the officers to have his firearm ready. The other officer will have other, less than lethal tools, ready in case they need to shift to another method. Let me give you an example from two weeks ago.

I'm going to just give you the basics, so as to not bore you with the details. Just work with me and assume that the police are justified up until this point, because they were.

We're looking at a Domestic Violence situation. Forced entry has been made. Two officers enter the front door and a man is on his knees, with his back to the door, with his girlfriend in front of him. He's choking her out. With his back to the officers and his hands obscured, one officer covers the situation with a firearm. The other officer has his Taser out, ready to deploy. After repeated challenges, the man refuses to comply so he's tased, subdued, and arrested. All is well that ends well.

But, lets say the guy had a weapon and brandished it in a threatening manner. The officer with the firearm would have fired and the officer with the Taser would have deployed his Taser because it's the weapon he had immediately available to him.

1: He's not going to take the time to reholster the Taser and draw his sidearm.

2: The officer with the firearm isn't going to bet his life on a Taser. When lives are on the line, any number of things could go wrong. Not the least of which would be heavy winter clothes which render Taser prongs unable to penetrate, making the Taser wholly ineffective.

The same sort of policies are in place for other, more "routine" events. A prime example is clearing a structure after a reported burglary, home invasion, et al. One officer will have his firearm ready. The other will have other tools ready so he can dive in and immediately go hand-to-hand if he's needed.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that being familiar with best practice police procedures, I can very easily see how someone could get shot and tasered at the same event.

Well to point out one little specific..... ;)

The tasering took place way after the shooting.

Was the guy dead when the tasering happened? My point being shot doesn't = dead by a long shot (no pun intended).

Seriously, it can take an insane amount of trauma to kill a person sometimes.

No, I just surfed past it while looking for something to watch. It was probably only 2 seconds exposure. Soon as I realized what it was, my left ear started bleeding, I got pains in my jaw, and I hit the channel button again.

Officer is in court at the moment. Expected to plead not guilty, in which case the bail hearing will be at 2:00pm ET.

As others have pointed out earlier in this thread, I can't help but think that the best way to not get shot by a cop is to keep your dick in your pants and avoid waving a weapon around while you're in public.

This is not to excuse the officer's (alleged) actions but there has to be some measure of guilt placed upon the "victim".
