Your average cop isn't going to risk his life unnecessarily so if they have an option to end the threat without undue risk to themselves that is the one they are most likely to use. I can't even say they are wrong.

Considering that the officer who shot a man 6 times when he was already down was successfully prosecuted for it, I'd say he probably was wrong to do that.

Obviously, shooting someone six times is wrong, the proper continuim of force needs to be followed, but I was talking about the people who said the cop should have used a leather jacket or belt instead of a gun.

Head shots aren't always lethal. When my step brother was shot by police in the 90's (armed with 9 mils) he got shot in the head and chest among other places - he made a full recovery. As for shooting someone several times, there aren't increasing levels of "dead" - it's like being a little bit pregnant. So if you have determined that you must use lethal force why would you only shoot once?

But no one ever said that the cop should have done that... What was suggested was that in this specific set of circumstances was that a leather jacket could readily be used as a shield or to entangle a short blade by someone with a moderate amount of skill. As you've watched the video, you've gotta admit that Yatim left himself open any number of times as the streetcar cleared... people are just chicken shits.

he was only convicted on the latter 6, the first three were somehow considered a valid response.

It's not about "increasing levels of dead," it's that he kept shooting him after he was down. Actually twice as much as it took to put him down.
