I assume he understands that verification has value, but that he wants to raise cash quick and sees making people pay for the checkmark as an easy way to do it. If his issue was ideological and wanting to destabilize experts, that seems like a fail, because a lot of them can and will buy the checkmark.

Of course, the approach is short-sighted, because at some point, a famous person will successfully sue Twitter for letting someone buy a checkmark despite not being the real McCoy and thus let that person run rampant. When that happens, Twitter will almost certainly lose more than this revenue stream will generate.

Journalists aren't special, technically - the right to speak truth to power is not the exclusive domain of journalists. They just tend to have more followers because journalism involves having sources. I could tell Elon he's a twat, but that's just my opinion.

But Elon seems to be taking extra efforts to slap them down.

Why?

Because they have folk who actually work for Elon telling them he's a twat, and bringing the receipts. And their credibility means that message gets out there to more people, and that terrifies Mister Popularity.

The same way we might take you more seriously about history because you studied history, if you ever used citations rather than just your usual meth-addled shitetwaddle.

I have used citations in the past. It's not exactly easy to manually type out a passage from a book or a paper you might want to cite. Especially if you don't own the book. If you're not a student or a professor you have to pay for access to JSTOR. I often link articles to my posts, but most people don't want to read them so they just make jokes at my expense. I also don't have an encyclopedic memory that recall any and all things involving history like some of y'all do so when I get something wrong or make a mistake that must mean that I'm lying about my history degree, no other option. But sure, the next time there's a discussion about history that I get involved in I'll be sure use citations.
