TAMPA, Fla. - A sheriff's deputy was suspended for manhandling a sobbing woman who was speeding to a hospital to see her ailing father and didn't want to wait for him to write a ticket.

A sobbing woman speeding to the hospital, eh?

Yeah, I'm suspecting that this officer may have saved a life or two by getting her off the road.

What a prick. If he gave a shit about the public he allegedly protects, he'd have escorted her to the hospital. He deserves what he gets.

Back when my oldest was born, my wife called me to tell me to get to the hospital, there were complications and she was going to be a premie. I hopped into the Ventura, sporting 425 horse, and proceded to rip a path to the childrens hospital as quick as I could muster without taking out anyone, somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 in some stretches. Cop had me dead to rights.
I was stopped, lectured about the possability of some dumb kid's ability who just got their license to differentiate speed and the possability of my running over them.
He was right. I apologized a lot, and then he cut me loose but he did follow me to the hospital.

Bad call on the cops part IMHO in this case. Shouldn't be a career ender, but a slap on the wrist is certianly in order.

I agree, but I do think he used excessive force.

This was my first thought on it. Some times one should use a little 'common' sense & save themselves & everyone else involved a lot of problems.

:unuts:What am I talking about!!? Too many doesn't have common sense!

At some point a cop has to decide if he's going to help people that need it, or just punish everyone he can.

You might have been right, if it wasn't for this:

He's not a cop, he's a thug with a badge, pure and simple. In the old days such people were dealt with by a mob of locals, a tree, and rope.

Sure, let's all pretend she wasn't a threat to everyone else's safety, or even better, that she has every right to endanger others so that she could make it in time to hear dear old dad's last words.

Did your father slap you around or touch you in that special place to make you this fucked up?

The silly cow was crying a bit as she was driving.

She couldn't have someone tell her what his last words were?

They're usually just *gurgle, gurgle...* anyway.

 Personal experience, doesn't apply to any other case...
I've mentioned before that daughter's birth didn't go as smoothly as it might. When other half rang dad to say that daughter had ben born, he let that fact slip without explaining that there was no reason to worry any more.
Dad did south London to Colchester - about 75 miles, a third of it through city streets - in less than an hour.
I hope that if dad had run into a police officer along the way, he'd have been able to make said officer understand the circumstances.

An escort should have been offered, that's humanitarian, but allows for sanctions should it transpire that the sob story is fake.

Doesn't matter, cop still doesn't have a right to use excessive force. Police exist to protect people, not abuse them.

I'm not making it "seem" like shit. I'm stating outright that people who speed are more of a threat. And it's fucking retarded to expect every traffic cop and state trooper to check out every sob story to make sure it's not bullshit. It's not his fucking problem, and he shouldn't be ignoring his duties to verify that irrelevant crap.

He gets scared if his pink jeep goes over 30 and thinks it will crash, thats why he thinks everyone will flip off the road and do 2,000 midair flips and land on a bus filled with newborn babies.

Er, no. Michael Schumacher driving at 100mph is safer than nine out of 10 people I know driving at 50. Speed, in itself, is not dangerous, its the circumstances and the driver that dictate that. Which is why the police officer should investigate before jumping to conclusions.

Actually he will hear something from everyone he stops. This situation is probably one in a hundred.

There is nothing to check out. He could just excort her to the hospital. The woman was distraught.

Physics is physics. Could be the best race car driver in the world, but when he's surprised with something unpredictable the collision will be that much more destructive at higher speeds. You cannot decide these things based on ideal circumstances.

Is it too much to expect cops not to slam crying women against cars and taunt them with the fact that they will never see thier father again cause they're going to jail? Cops are public servants. If they wanted to be gigantic assholes then they should have gotten a job that isn't paid for by the tax payers.

His behavior might have been over the top, but anyone who thinks that a cop should either take you at your word or take the time to verify the sob story you think excuses your reckless driving is 100% wrong.

    Wow... I can't believe I'm hearing..

"He might have saved lives by beating this woman senseless!"

99% of the time cops will escort you to the hospital in these circumstances, unfortunately for this lady, she got one from the 1% who are generally thugs with a badge. What a fucking bastard that cop is.

Hopefully he loses his badge and she gets some money for his thug-like behavior.

Uncle Albert, like the cops in my hometown, thinks that the motto "To protect and Serve" is just that, a motto.
