I don't have to check my self defense abilities anywhere. I also don't have to worry about collateral damage.

Better to acknowledge things and take some minimal action to prepare than wrap yourself in hollow condescension to avoid acknowledging your total, helpless dependence on others for safety and defense.

Or did you think you weren't completely fucking transparent with that?

I don't see anything she says as discounting the right of anyone to defend themselves. Personally I find it amusing that some people seem to thing they are indestructable because they carry a gun and are defenseless if they don't have it.

No, she's just belittling them for having the audacity to prepare to exercise that right. In the mind of a person like her, doing anything but sitting on your ass and assuming that nothing bad could ever happen-or that if it does, someone else will come along to save her-is surrendering to fearful paranoia. If she acknowledges the practicality at all, if she budges even one inch, she'd have to admit to herself that she is useless for her own defense and a helpless victim waiting to happen.

Can you cite an example with a quote, or is this another bullshit portrayal to marginalize others so that you can feel better about yourself?

I've seen enough of Apostle's posts to know that he feels defenseless without a gun and feels completely safe when he has one.

I've met Garamet and feel that your characterization of her when it comes to self defense is inaccurate.

You and I do not disagree about one's right and obligation to defend oneself. So what's your problem? Do hyou just hate Garamet so much that you have to vent outrage on anyone who doesn't see her as the second coming of Hillary Clinton?

See, I carry a gun because I'm not indestructable. I'm not John Wayne, don't have a S on my shirt, and try to avoid unnecessary perforation. Unfortunately, there's some folk out there that don't really care about my desire to not get short or stabbed and I carry to put holes into them before they can do the same to me if it comes right down to it.

Now, I'm not defenseless if I'm unarmed, but having a gun on me makes it a whole lot easier for me to not get put in a body bag which is my ultimate goal.

If it comes down to it and someone attacks you and you take them out, I'm for it. But I feel that counting on a gun to protect is you is foolishness. Especially against a knife. One of Colonel Cooper's rules is to know what you're shooting at and what's behind it. What happens if you're attacked in a crowded venue?

Again, that's not calling into doubt your right and obligation to defend yourself,it's just I think that you're thinking is one dimensional and unrealistic.

Well, if we're in a crowded room and he's close enough to stab me, he's close enough for me to shoot and not miss.

Not to mention that I'm not limited to shooting him. If he's close enough to strike me, he's close enough to get struck back. I'm not black belt, but I have been in a fistfight or two. If he has a clear enough LOS to shoot me he can be shot at in return.

If you're attacked with a knife in a crowded venue, you're ****ed.

Of course, I've never really heard of anyone attacking someone with a knife in a crowded venue other than for purposes of assassination that have a lot of planning going into them. You're not saying anything revolutionary by saying know your target and what's beyond it. I and many others here have grown up with that rule. It is part of our person. Of course, in a crowd if someone were to attack someone with a knife, the Red Sea would most likely part, meaning that if you weren't laying on the ground with a slit throat, you might have a clear shot. Realistically though, the average American's main enemies are street thugs and other opportunists.

    And actormike, apparently.

Oh, and FYI, my gun takes full advantage of all known dimensions. :)

If you pull your gun out and try to shoot in a crowded venue you will get stabbed.

If the knife attacker is 21 feet or closer to you when he decides to attack, your reaction time will not be enough to get the gun out, aim and shoot.

This is why it's not only important to know how to shoot but to know how to defend yourself from knife attacks with nothing but your hands.

I'm not talking martial arts either. I'm talking courses that teach you realistic defensive tactics.

F.I.G.H.T is one of them (Fierce Israeli Guerrilla Hand-to-Hand Techniques) for example. http://www.usadojo.com/styles/about-haganah.htm

No. A gun is one dimensional. Your target has to be in front of it. A crowded venue doesn't mean in a room, it could be an open street with people around.

Hey, if a gun makes you feel secure, fine. If your state in it's infintie wisdom thinks you're responsible enough to carry a concealed gun, fine. But I think you're putting way too many chips on a weapon that at times you can't use and which takes time to draw and prepare and which can be taken away in close quarters.

Burton Gilliam. Terrific character actor with a ridiculously toothy grin. I saw him the other night in an old Burt Reynolds movie, Gator. In addition to Blazing Saddles, I always remember him in Back to the Future II (the gun salesman who gives Marty the Peacemaker, "Of course, if you lose, I'm takin' it back.") and in Fletch (he's one of the airplane mechanics Fletch cons out of some information).

He's retired from film and TV roles, I guess. But, yeah, I heard he was doing commercials. According to imdb, he's done them for a Texas delearship also. Might be a nice little retirement gig he's got going...

This is what it always comes down to. People who don't trust themselves with guns, don't trust anyone else with them either. Brother, if you don't feel your responsible enough to carry around an inanimate object with no will or passion of it's own, then you're not even an adult. I would worry more about my dog hurting someone than my gun. And my dog is a miniature schnauzer.

Wow, small world! Last night I had a dream that I was inside an apartment building with a shotgun using slugs. For some reason I accidentally popped off two rounds into the ceiling, but the gun made no noise...I felt it kick but it was completely silent! Anyway, I was hoping the person I was talking with didn't notice, and when I got a chance I inspected the damage. There were two holes going way up inside the apartment building, and my only thought was "I don't hear anyone screaming so I guess nobody got hit." :jayzus:

Why would you use slugs in a shotgun indoors when buckshot will blow anyone to hell and back and not even go through drywall?

Useful advice if you live in iraq or columbia or south africa. Luckily for me i live in the kind of place where im statistically more likely to have to confront a truck running me down in my own house than ever facing someone with a gun :)

It was a dream...who knows why we do weird things in dreams?
Anyway, buckshot will indeed penetrate drywall. Get a piece of scrap drywall and try it out.

Young people and guns - I think me and my buds shot every kind of gun through every conceivable material for fun. We were the MythBusters
of our time. Does a potato on the end of a shotgun silence it?
Put it near your ear and find out. :P
Can you shoot an archery arrow out the barrel of a .410 shotgun if you remove the shot from the shell first? :P etc. etc.
