It was very reminiscent of "Civil War" with a dash of "Days of Future Past".

Liked how they handled the fight at the end...I could only imagine what was happening on the other side of that door...

Well, it was one case where I actually would have prefered that "Heroes" went more in the "Lost" direction and didn't show or tell us what the power was for some time to come.

But I think it played out pretty well as it was. Not sure if Malcolm McDowell or the writers deserves the lion's share of the credit for that.

I'm wondering if it's just healing or if it extends to out-and-out resurrection. That plant looked not just sickly, but dead.

I think it's too early to tell where each of those players is ideologically.

Well, enjoy the wait for the DVDs.

How dare you insult the episode by comparing it to that piece of crap "Civil War" in any way, shape or form!

The fanboy in me kind of wanted to see the all-out slugfest, but given that the budget would never allow for it to match the imagination, the way they did it was probably for the best.

Of course, it's totally for the best when you don't stop to think, "Future Peter should simply stop time, get Hiro's sword and decapitate Future Sylar."

That was bloody awesome, and even though it is obvious in retrospect it never occured to me that Sylar could have still been the one pulling the strings in the future and had a total wtf moment when he killed Claire.

Yeah, I agree completely. I just like to speculate wildly every step of the way.

Particularly after the last show, if the Hatian is loyal to Mrs. Petrelli and ended up on the ‘bad’ side, it’s not hard to conclude that her darker side controls her, and she might be in with Linderman. Oh, and I agree that his gift could be life, not simply healing, which is why I liked the idea of giving such a power to a murderer.

I know, I had to resist the urge once I started thinking about it. Peter has to be constrained by a one-power-at-a-time limit, or he’d be near omnipotent. As it is, I wondered why he hadn’t done more in 5 years with all his abilities. Though I suppose we could chalk it up to Peter’s fucked up girlfriend, his guilt for killing everyone, and his main adversary being a brother that he idolized. But it seems Sylar can use two powers at once (e.g. appear as Nathan and reach through a door, turn to ice, whatever).

Yeah but they led us that way - Sylar got the power to 'morph' from Candice, who Hiro had introduced to Bennet to ‘disappear’ via his underground railroad. So the real Nathan was in charge when the underground railroad got started, and he must have already been rounding up the mutants (X-Men revisited), and Sylar didn’t take over as President until some time after he murdered Candice and took her power.

But it’s best not to look too deeply into the story - do we assume Nathan started the lie that the bomb was Sylar - to protect his reputation, and his secret? All part of the Linderman Plan, part of which we heard from his own mouth? I mean, Sylar couldn’t have started the rumor (despite what Peter said), he was supposedly blown up. And I wondered why Sylar didn’t just kill and absorb Parkman if he was President for more than a week? Mind reading would be a pretty useful talent, e.g. to learn who could be trusted. But I rationalized that one away by assuming Sylar must have acquired another similar power, and just stopped thinking about it.

He didn't need it, I will have to rewatch the scene, but when Sylar reveals himself to Claire he says something about how he doesn't need to take powers off anymore people, because she was the last one he was waiting for having already accumulated massive political power.

As far as everyone knew, Sylar was dead, and I presume he wanted to keep it that way. Plus having Parkman hunting down mutants for him provided potential targets he could use with less people noticing.

Hiro said he brought DL, Candice and Molly to Bennet, for the protection of what I called the "underground railroad." We know Sylar took DL and Candice's power, so the underground railroad had a leak. We also heard that Bennet was the leak, he leaked to Parkman, in exchange for protecting Claire, possibly among other reasons.

But a megalomaniac passing up a chance to read minds? That doesn't suddenly make sense just cos they said so. "You're with me, right Suresh?" Why would a nut like Sylar take the chance that Mohindar was loyal, when all he had to do was kill Parkman and steal his mind reading power. Little room for doubt, especially as Parkman's a block head and couldn't (and didn't) use his power for much anyway.

Christ, Parkman saw Nathan phase right through the door and he still thought it was Patrelli that he was taking orders from. Preposterously stupid man.

Anyway, presumably, once Sylar had killed Nathan and assumed his place, he kept the Hatian around to block Parkman's ability, and prevent Parkman from learning he was impersonating Nathan. But why take the chance? Sylar's not supposed to be as dumb as Parkman is, is he?

As I said, best not to think too deeply about it. Maybe there are answers, some might even make sense, but it takes some real contorting to get there, much of the time.

I think the reason Sylar let Parkman live was because it simply wasn't practical for him to run the country and go off hunting down his enemies. Parkman was just a tool he could use to find out where his enemies were hiding, and his mind reading ability was especially useful to that end. I think once Sylar felt safe and secure, he would've done away with Parkman as well and only kept the Haitian around.

Fucking NBC let the episode run longer than an hour, so my DVR didn't get the whole episode.

It cut off right when Ando says to Hiro "I've seen the man you're going to be" after Sylar and Peter made their hands turn blue and orange.

How much longer did the episode run after that? I think I'm just gonna have to download the episode now.

And they wonder why people like to pirate TV shows.

My guess is that Sylar couldn't take Parkman's power once he'd assumed Nathan's identity. Everyone thought Sylar was dead from the blast, how to explain a stiff with it's head cut open? For that matter, how did Sylar dispose of Nathan's corpse?

I also think that the Hatian, who seems to have two powers, power blocking and mind wiping, never got to the President's inner circle once Sylar became Nathan, otherwise, Sylar's disguise might've slipped. And Bennett knew how to block Parkman, surely Sylar could as well.

Bennet needs the Haitian to block Parkman. Else Parkman would have never have found Claire in the diner.

As for Sylar - you're right, he never got near Nathan/Sylar because his cover would be blown - and for that matter, the Haitian was probably alive because Sylar would have a hell of a time killing him.

You're right of course, for whatever reason, I was remembering / transposing the scene of Bruce blocking J'onn's telepathy in last weeks The Batman. But then, Batman could probably block Parkman too.:)

Yeah, the Hatian’s blocking power is pretty cool. Seems he can turn it off - plenty of people have used their powers around him, so either he blocks people by specifically stopping their power, or he can put out a general block that stops all people from using their powers except ones he specifically allows. Or maybe he can do it either way.

Funny thing about the Hatian’s memory wipe ability, you’d think he was able to read the memories since he’s able to pick and choose which memories he will wipe. I don’t think he has ever wiped someone clean - except maybe Claire’s rapist quarterback friend - so most of the time he’s been selective about what he erases. So how long does it take for a thought to become a memory? And maybe the Hatian can be used as a pretty effective lie detector (second place behind Parkman).

Nathan did use his powers on him.

Early in the season Nathan saved Pete from falling to his death. It was how Pete found out about the powers.

Yeah, a normal person could probably dispose of a corpse a whole bunch of ways.

Sylar's super-powers would allow him a lot more options. He could nuke the corpse until it was just ash. He could liquefy it (unless that power only works on metal). He could use D.L.'s power and put the corpse into a solid object or walk it a mile underground.

    Did I miss something here?

    1. The reason that this "dark future" came to pass is because Sylar did not die when Hiro gutted him.
    2. Sylar did not die when Hiro gutted him because he regenerated.
    3. Sylar got his regeneration power from Claire Bennet.

Why is Clair Bennet still alive in the "dark future" if Sylar supposedly killed her already and took her brain?

Seriously, what did I miss that would explain that?

I suspect the girl, Molly, that Sylar mentioned (who also appears in the next episode) will have something to do with it.

Also, it could have easily been a divergent timeline. Hiro has demonstrated an ability to control both time and space. Why not both at the same time, but on accident?

You missed nothing, I rationalized that one away by assuming the timeline changed in the future - because Future Hiro started 'tinkering' with the past.

Assume also that Fut. Hiro makes changes (or tries to make them): 1) send 'save the cheerleader' message to Past Peter (done), 2) tell Past Hiro he must kill Sylar (done, in future, plus the comic helped, so this one took care of itself), 3) help the heroes to stop the bomb (still unfinished). Maybe number 3 can take care of itself without Future Hiro's help. Or maybe Future Peter will meddle and try to 'fix' the timeline on his own, possibly with a visit to himself in the past (just for example).

So in your example - in the current Future Timeline - Claire was dead for part of the timeline, but then it automatically corrected itself and it turned out Claire had never really died. So e.g. for Bennet, one day he knew Claire had been killed at Homecoming, the next day (after Future Hiro completed his subway message), Claire had never been killed. Also, then, Future Peter's memories would have instantly changed after Future Hiro's trip to the subway - to recall Future Hiro's visit and (now) that he save Claire. Poof, the whole Future Timeline changes to play out differently because of the one big change (save Claire). Some people notice the change (Bennet, Future Peter, Sylar) but don't realize it's a change; others remained oblivious to the change.

Thanks to Future Hiro getting the message back to Past Peter to 'save cheerleader', Peter saves her and she lives. Sylar no longer has regeneration ability, but Past Hiro didn't get a chance to kill Sylar yet. When Past Hiro goes back and kills Sylar, Sylar won't regenerate.

But they still have to fix the bomb, it's a dark future even with Nathan in charge. And Past Hiro and Ando probably believed Nathan's lie (he lied to the whole world, and only Peter and Sylar knew the truth) that it was Sylar who exploded. Which I'm guessing will complicate the 'stop the bomb' story in the final few shows.

The weakest point in all of that is the speculation of what other changes would have automatically resulted from the Claire change - e.g. would Bennett have still ended up creating his mutant pipeline if Claire had died 5 years earlier and he had remained a company man? Etc. etc. But all of that is fixed automatically with a wave of the magic time wand - the whole timeline changed to reflect the differences, so it automatically becomes the new timeline.

The Haitian has the ability to erase people's memories. I think he can also alter them. So maybe the Haitian altered Bennet's memory into thinking Claire died, or something.
