(B) You chose the wrong analogy. You don't counter what you perceive as sexism with a comparison to racism. If you really thought he was addressing all women (or maybe just you?), you could have countered with "That's like saying all men's balls hang around their knees when they get older."

Who the fuck merged this? Without getting into the original posts, endorsement of a misogynist attack on a member is definitely not on.

What dazzles me is that at least three posters I could name have outright called her an idiot, several more have implied that her reasoning skills are not optimal, and she doesn't snap back at that, but a generic comment about "older women" (and based on her ever-so-lovely avatar, she's only middle-aged) sends her into

I can't count the number of names I've been called nor the number of posters who've called me them, but as @Asyncritus said somewhere in this forum, that says more about them than it does about me.

Although whichever mod pulled this out of the other thread, I'd question whether it was fair to choose an upper-case thread title and make it seem as if Async started it.

Jokes about women aging aren’t the same as jokes about men aging.

That’s because our current society treats the two differently. Men get distinguished as we age, women get decrepit.

The gender pay gap in Hollywood is already huge but it is most stark for older actors. A female actor’s earnings peak at 34 a male’s 51. That is pretty damn huge and goes to show how little we value older women.

So yeah, I’d stay away from poking fun at older womens appearance. You might not ‘see age’ (like some don’t see color) but society does, and punishes women for it. Lots of folks suffering abuse don’t find that abuse as humorous as those blissfully unaware do.

And in case you think it is just Hollywood, here’s a 2015 working paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research:

Based on evidence from over 40,000 job applications, we find robust evidence of age discrimination in hiring against older women, especially those near retirement age. But we find that there is considerably less evidence of age discrimination against men after correcting for the potential biases this study addresses.
