Kinda telling, isn't it? The woman's almost 47 years old and, only now in 2008--with her husband running for President!--has she been able to muster some pride in the country? How awful it must be for liberals to live in a land that they despise so much, that casually disparaging it is almost reflexive. How blind they must be.
I calls 'em like I sees 'em. I dismissed the plagiarism charge and the gay sex and drugs charge earlier this week; this one is a reaction to what Mrs. Obama actually said.
I have to agree with garamet. You can't impose pride in your country on an individual, nor should there be some expectation of same just because one resides there. If she wasn't until now, then she wasn't. I can't exactly blame an African American for being pragmatic about their overall assessment of pride in their country when one looks at its history from the beginning. There are a great many things about America of which I am proud, but there are almost as many things about it that are disappointing.
Oh look, two middle-class white men are surprised a black woman doesn't see America the same way they do. It's simply disgusting that she wasn't proud of America back in the days when the idea of a Black or Female president seemed ridiculous. I mean, why would something like that bother her?
Dumb is an understatement. I see it as a kind of worship. And worship of a thing on a knee jerk level with no reflection is an insult to personal dignity.
I just find it astonishing that a thinking individual (?) could come up with nothing--nothing!--for which they would have some pride in this country. I don't demand, expect, or want blind, unquestioning love of this country--that would be going way too far to the other extreme--but to see nothing good about the country is just...
I came to the realization I was no longer proud to call myself an American a couple months ago. 1776: "Give me liberty or give me death." 2008: "Give me all your liberty or the terrorists will get you!"
I'll bet Mrs. Obama will think America is the most racist, evil, diplorable, vile, shithole on the face of the planet if her baby gets his ass handed to him in November (or more likely August). And who here is so naive they believe the consultants and groomers weren't behind this 'Ode to the Savior'?
What I say: "Mrs. Obama finds NOTHING about which she can be proud of the country." What you hear: "Mrs. Obama must drown in national self-congratulation before she (or her husband) is acceptable."
You're...an idiot. I can be proud of things about this country, our free markets, our ability to pull ourself up by our bootstraps, but if the overwhelming tendency is for us to do things I'm not proud of, the bad outweighs the good.
I imagine she does, but from what I've gathered she seems to be the kind of person who looks at things more as a sum of the parts, rather than the parts.
Why does it matter? I love my country, but there seems to be no end to the problems we have on a daily basis from the local to the federal level, and I voice my concerns as such. Maybe she has faith in her husband and is proud to see that many in the U.S. are seeing the same? Really, this whole issue is nothing but a tempest in a teapot. J.
First, you at least could mention some things you are proud of, regardless of whether the whole picture is positive or not. Second, I find is astonishing that you believe (if I'm hearing you right) that the bad outweighs the good.
Why? To stroke your personal feelings? They need stroking? And in the name of this country? What a fragile ego.
I betcha *in this one instance* he believes that the media is being truthful, accurate, and reporting EVERYTHING the candidate's wife has said on every public occasion. By tomorrow he'll be grumbling about the librul MSM...
It shouldn't be something that is brought up at all. Try discussing the fucking political issues instead of all this personal bickering and other irrelevance. Ten more months of this shit.
It isn't about ego. It's about perspective. Like I said, I'm just kindof astonished that she'd never been proud of the country.
