The disallowed goal and the yellow card on Findley were shockingly bad calls. They cost us two points today and a starting forward in the next game. Terrible.

By all accounts (i.e. the bloke I work with who watched it on his PC) the US were very unlucky and played great after a bad start.

Well, if England can win tonight then its pretty much a given that we'll get through the group, unless we can on to lose againt Slovenia.

I'll wager that England should be able to handle Slovenia fairly easily. The USA really should've won that game.

I'm not too torn up about Findlay being out for the Algeria game...I'm not a big fan of his anyway. Buddle or even Gomez will do fine in his stead.

It was a fun game to watch, too! Lots of back & forth, long balls, and attacking play!

For all the complaining I've seen about that disallowed goal, it sure looks to me like Bradley--that's the blue jersey you see peeking past the last defender--was offsides as the ball came off Donovan's foot. The ball wasn't to him, but in that situation he certainly was involved in the play because the goalkeeper had to react to him. Certainly it was a close enough call that it hardly ranks as a terrible call of any sort.

Liet - he was in an offsides position but he was not committing the offense itself. The ball clearly (and thank you for providing the evidence) was not going to him and he wasn't materially affecting the play so he couldn't have been guilty of the penalty that cost the U.S. the game.

    Bad call by the ref.

If the player is offside he doesnt have to play the ball as long as his position could be considered 'interfering with play'.
Basicaly you're OK if you're off to the left or the right, but if you're anywhere near the middle or the 'keeper you are considered part of play.

Bradley is slightly behind the defender at that point, and the ball is slightly in the air. Cannot tell from that photo where Bradley was at the time the ball was actually struck. And IIRC, the call wasn't offsides, but rather some other nebulous foul on the US.

Understood but the play wasn't a pass, was it?

Oh - OK. If they made up something else then I'll have to withdraw my comments until I have something more specific to gripe about. :)

On the feed I was watching, they never clarified what the call was. The announcers were just guessing and never even considered the possibility of Bradley offsides. That ball is also just barely off the foot, and the ball off the foot moves a lot faster than a player on the run, so while that shot doesn't definitively show Bradley offsides, it looks more likely than not to me that he was, and that the U.S. really can't complain about not having that goal allowed. In any event, so long as that call is made by human beings, that play was close enough that getting it wrong is just part of the game.

I think that a large part of the complaining about the call on that disallowed goal relates to poor officiating elsewhere in the game, resulting in the officials getting no benefit of the doubt.

It doesnt matter, if the ball is played forward and someone is offside and considered part of play the flag goes up

In the espn.com article on the game it says the ref never stated what exactly the foul was and refused to after the game had ended.

England look like they're fucking half asleep during the first half. Come on like this is Algeria not Argentina. They should be giving them a working over.

There's even a bird bedding down on the Algerian net. What a joke.

    What a joke. Seriously.

Fabio looked like he was having an aneurysm there.

This isn't the England I saw even the other day.

Pretty uninspired, flat play from England eh? They honestly should have put both the US and Algeria away fairly easily.

Didn't your lot bring Fabio Capello in back in 2008 for some obscene amount of money like $9 Million a year to avoid just this scenario? Namely a bunch of big name players with little team chemistry not gelling together in the World Cup together who really have not lived up to their billing yet?

Just curious what all the Brits on the board think?

The call was not offsides from what I understand. Besides, Bradley wasn't peeking past anyone. He had a defender firmly wrapped around his waist with both arms.

I think America would have advanced whether we won or drew.
I would bet both England and America would win the final games and go through

And though I imagine the papers will declare the end of the world in London tomorrow, because of the weird way this group has unfolded if the English beat Slovenia they can still win the group. Infact, the only team that can't still win the group at this point is Algeria.

I think most Americans were against England because they want to win the group. After Germany's showing today, I don't think it matters as much anymore.

Absolutely shocking performance from England. :bang:

Fucking horrible football, no imagination, no creativity, no slick passing... dreadful football. This was one of the easiest groups we could have hoped for but here we are, making an almighty struggle out of it.
If this lot don't get through the group, a rotten tomato welcome better greet them at Heathrow when they return to England! A few boos will be the least of your concerns Rooney, you fat overrated gimp, do something for fuck sake!
