    What I want to know is, why does pos-rep grant points but neg-rep doesn't subtract them? Why not take away any ability to alter rep scores?

    For that matter, there are some negative connotations to "disagree". Is there a way we could change it to say something more palatable, like "differently agrees"?

    Better still, let's take "agree" out of the occasion all together. Instead of agreeing, we can "potato". And instead of disagreeing we can "banana."

    You are clearly trying to alter "behavior" or thoughts you dislike by "punishing" them with neg rep. There's no punishment without the -1 point aspect, hence the whining.

    You are trying to force a change in people or drive them away with rep.

    Exactly. It's not like anyone's being fooled. Groups of people would get together and drive down the rep of someone with unpopular opinions so that he (or she) couldn't posrep anyone who might agree with him (or her), or negrep those with whom he or she disagreed. It happened all of the time.

    To be fair, that's what you do, and that's the intended purpose of rep. There are others, however, who use it solely for what John's describing. They're easy to spot. They're the ones whining about the new policy.

    Because it's the same as "karma" on other boards, which I'll note usually don't have anyone whining to the Admins about it. It's a vote for or against something someone has posted, and a vote against should actually count against someone.

    And what if rep wars do take place? No one actually forces anyone to do anything. So if you can't take the heat, stay out of the Red Room.

    Which makes it pointless. And the sad thing is that when the scores are reset, they'll never be in the red again. :brood:
