Petition to Reconsider Rep

How can it be sad if it's meaningless?

 

Now I understand. Rep was functioning as a form of Math in the Red Room, a nono. Well, shit. I can't argue about that -- every time someone would neg someone in the Red Room, it'd invoke math, and thus the negger would get warned. Sounds completely reasonable then.

But, to be safe, you better disable the point addition for pos'ing as well, as that's also a form of Math in the Red Room. Even Muad'Dib will need to be warned for this if it doesn't change.

 

So, should 3 or 4 guys start negrepping my posts due to some kind of petty disfavor, which could be another name for the Red Room really, and my rep goes into the red, what do I do about it if I choose to rep someone? I can't. My rep has been driven into the red, making it impossible for me to posrep another person. In essence, those 3 or 4 guys have bullied me into losing my ability to vote in favor of something, and it can happen to anyone, including those who aren't playing the rep war game. There are no checks and balances, other than "stay out of the Red Room", which is, by an enormous margin, the busiest forum on the board that covers a wide range of interesting topics.

Then learn to deal with it. Apparently you've forgotten, but I started out well in the red here myself. I've also been rep-warred against, but I didn't let that stop me from posting because I knew it was someone being butthurt, and I wasn't going to let them make me butthurt. And guess what? Eventually my rep score recovered.

 

And when that happens, I tend to get a PM trying to organize rep efforts to block the negging group. Moreless balances out.

 

Which goes against the whole idea of not having to play the game. One way or the other, if you want to have the normal privilege of posrepping someone, you either have to stay away from voicing your own opinions (lest you anger the mob), or joining in with the whole rep war.

Can you name anyone who's been negged into the red who wasn't:
a) A douchebag or
2) Propping up a douchebag?
I can't. No one gets up in the morning and says "You know what would be fun? Spending weeks digging up old posts to negrep! " It is a serious pain in the ass to do and if enough people are doing it to you enough to take you into the red, there's likely a very good reason.

But sure: Baba, Liet, POTN, RickDeckard, actormike. Now, some of those people asked to be set to max red, but that was only after they were the target of rep war. Hell, prior to September, Tasvir was part of the rep war clique, talk about someone who should have been in the red.

Really?! Let me get this straight: Your list of non-annoying posters consists of: actormike, POTN, RickDeckard, Liet, and Baba!? Shit, Baba is so annoying that the board's owner regularly negs him.

POTN proudly announced he was "the third most popular poster on the board" while engaging in a repwar himself. Lie-ette regularly reaches Dennis Bailey levels of douchebaggery, and Dick Retard hates America and everything real Americans hold dear. The closest you have to a "victim" in your little list is actormike who, ironically, benefited from a recent repwar because he was a useful pawn. Even so, I have it on authority that there were people who had a very hard time posrepping him because they personally found him to be a douche.

My point of view is that posters like you are even worse, and you and your pals deserve the shit they get from those posters, so it all balances out.

If you can't handle rep, then you probably shouldn't be posting here. That's kind of the point I and others have been making about it being part of the culture of the board, which is made up of misfits of varying degrees. If you want a cuddly little discussion board where you can discuss things without anyone worrying about anyone getting butthurt, there are plenty of other boards out there. Despite being negged plenty of times, I've never been shy about voicing my opinions and neither should anyone else.

 

So, on a board of misfits, you advocate being able to subdivide those misfits into easier to define categories by their rep.

That's not healthy for a community of misfits. It's not that one gets a neg or pos rep, per se, but rather that one can be bullied into a position where they can't even rep agree with someone's post, thus nullifying the effectiveness, and the point, of the rep system for them.

 

14thD had six shinies LONG before the rep rules changed. He just rep 'turned off' so you couldn't see it.

Oh, I get it just fine. Your post just doesn't address the issues with the way rep has been setup. Your entire premise is based on a sentiment of "if you don't like it, man up or get the fuck out", and that's a surefire way to lose people who might otherwise stick around and become productive board members. When the environment makes posting here a chore, what is the impetus to stay?

 

You are now so invested in this little "game" that you are re-writing history? I don't recall it ever being intended as a game. We have plenty of games in the Arcade, go play one of those if you are so bored with posting that you have to invent these little games that reduce board functionality on both on a technological and cultural level. Feel free to code all of that nonsense yourself and go make an Entitled BBS where others like you can play your silly game.
