There is no double standard here.

The Red Room is mostly left alone, but it is moderated lightly. Overall, things tend to take care of themselves and it's all good in the end.

Sexual harassment is largely a subjective thing and if it involved most of us adults it would have to be pretty bad, threatening and unrelenting for it to get to a point we would ask for action.

TKO is a kid. The line where it feels intrusive, disturbing and threatening is going to be different for a young girl than say for me. When it comes to deciding when to step in to moderate is largely a judgement call. In this case, a moderator was approached by an underaged poster who felt harassed. We can't and won't in good conscience tell a kid to suck it up and live with it when she feels violated...but it was obvious no one was trying to make her feel that way either.

Listkeeper, in my judgement took the most prudent and fair course...leaving the thread alone, leaving the poster of the thread alone..meaning no warnings...and removing the source of the discomfort for the girl. Conversation was not stopped, no one was warned and the girl in question would no longer feel like a creepy line was crossed.

It was a judgement call and a good one. A compromise that should have offended no one. Since this is the reaction we actually got, I have to ask:

When have we arrived at the point where the sanctity of the flame or troll takes precidence over every other consideration on the board? Why is it more important for Volpone's joke to remain untouched...virgin, if you will, at the expense of a young girl's feelings?

And I know the slippery slope argument will be forthcoming. But again, much of the moderation here is judgement calls. That includes taking the age and experience of the people involved into consideration to the best of our ability and trying to find the best course of action for everyone involved. There are no cookie-cutter answers right for every occasion.

Some of you disagree and will continue to disagree. We can't and won't please everyone all the time.

On a personal note...I have no idea why you are so venom on me Tex, that you would say something so vile about me, but whether you care or not, my respect for you has certainly taken a major hit after reading it. I had nothing to do with any of this until now and certainly didn't deserve that in any event. :(

Okay Storm, just for you. Lazy bastiche.

Volpone posted a thread titled "The Deflowering of TKO" in reference to her handing out her first couple of negreps. Well, as we know, "deflowering" has a fairly specific meaning when applied to young women, and TKO felt creeped out and took offense. She asked for the thread title to be changed. Volpone was by then offline (and couldn't have changed the title anyway) so Listkeeper changed the title to "TKO Discovers her inner bitch" after consulting with her. This somewhat deflated the joke in Volpone's original post, but the thread was otherwise unaffected. No one was warned, or banned, or censored, or anything like that.

A certain segment of our population took vast offense to this thread title change and the :shitstorm: did commence.

You want more, go read the threads in question.

Dude, you ought to talk to your boy Tex. :(

You know what shit around here is all fun and games, and what shit is serious. I'm not sure that Tex does. He crossed some serious lines.

    Strictly IMHO, natch!

Tex certainly started this, but there was plenty of other parties to help throw gasoline on the fire. The one thing about this that bothered me the most was the premature attacks on Volpone when he wasn't even around. Two MODERATORS on this site went way over the line, IMO. \

Nick, you compared Volpone to Ted in terms of creepiness and sexual harassment. Listy flat out accused him of being a rapist because he had the nerve to come late to the discussion and try to defend himself against the feeding frenzy. If y'all were so concerned about keeping tempers and hyperbole to a minimum, then should examine some of your own comments.

As for myself, for the first time here I let myself get emotionally involved in a thread. That was a mistake. I don't plan on making it twice.

I agree that there was a lot of people throwing gas on the fire, but Tex was the only one I saw that was blinded by lunacy and frothing at the mouth crazy.

Yes, that was over the line. By far.

Amen. There's no point in getting so worked up. There's a ton of threads that have totally pissed me off through the years around here. I'd hate to see what I was like if I really said the shit I felt about some of this stuff.

I apologize for the tone of my first PM to you. It was unnecessarily nasty.

However, you just need to exercise a little self control or NO ONE will take you seriously (even people who are in all other ways your allies).

EDIT: With people I hold in higher regard (hint hint), I tend to expect more from them.

No, we have arrived at the point where the Red Room is apparently able to be censored if it offends someone.

There is nothing wrong with editing a title like this, it happens all the time, however the attitude that the mods should in the Red Room be actively looking out to prevent people from offence does seem counter to the ideas it was started with.

Well, I went thru the Red Room, just out of curiosity....

Of the first 22 posts, 7 are about Wordforge "drama", IE bannings, the TKO thing, etc, etc

One is asking anyone if they've ever slept with an asian.

    One is a firefly thread.

One is a thread about Celine Dion Vs. Elvis Presley

One is an "homage" to a storm post.

    One is a parody thread.

12 of 22 theads. Over half of the really active threads in the red room devoted to things like 18 year-olds being raped and what a good singer Celine Dion is.

It seems like a lot of chaff.

What is your point? The Red Room is full of pointless and offensive things? Sure, and I am sure it always will be.

But there also will be times that there will be moderation in there.

The whole room isn't going to change just because there will be incidents where discretion is needed.

I think, maybe,I wasn't clear in my meaning.

I was agreeing that I don't see it as a slippery slope. Changing a thread title hardly seems like a big deal, when it seems as though the larger issue is an overabundance of threads like the ones listed above.

    Rosencratz,

As annoying as it can be to see what seems to be a bajillion threads on the same subject, censorship will probably not do anything to quell the discussion on said topic. Most likely, it'll just spill over into other legit threads and lead to passive-aggressive trolling if you do that. I've seen this at other board.

The easiest and best thing to do in response is to not read it, and contribute to the board by brining up subjects you want to discuss. Eventually, the shit will die down, and things will go back to being [-]relatively[/-] sane again.

What doesn't make sense is why the mods would feel compelled to move this 400 post thread into the help desk. Is it helpful? Does it make sense? Does it shut us up from complaining? Does it resolve things?

What the fuck is the point?

Why are we supposed to be handicapped from complaining in the red room exactly? What's the purpose? This is a bitchin' and moaning thread. They changed the name to the help desk to avoid these threads. If I want to rail against a mod then so fucking be it. Do you think Tex really thought Eliteforge would cave on this when he started it?
