Appalachian counts as a minority according to the Feds and you tell someone you come from West Virginia and they automatically assume you know about moonshine (I do) and incest (I don't).

Despite that, I managed to get an education and a job and everything.

But I bet ya cousins are dumb as bricks.

One was smart enough to go to college and everything. Why just last year we got one of them tair indoor outhouses with the water. Preacher said it's the tool of the devil, but sleeping with my sister made it all better.

Excuse me, but what predjudice is associated with your background?

I mean if you show up with your degree and experience I don't see how they would even know your ethnic background.

Unless its the missing teeth and the overalls you wear to interviews.

That's just it. The assumption is people from WV are hard workers, but dumber than cowshit. Even with a degree, getting the interview is easier said than done just because of that. Not to mention that even getting to college is hard for many because of poverty and lack of education in the first place.

Not unlike another group I might add. But you won't hear us saying we're held down by The Man and are owed anything.

Willbury makes an interesting point. I think that the reason that West Virginians might not be as resentful as minority groups is that they aren't a recognizable minority. A West Virginian dressed up nicely, even in casual clothes, would never have to worry about being passed up by a cab driver the way that a similarly dressed young black man would. Just as importantly, most whites who are prejudiced do not exhibit nearly as much hatred against other whites, of any background except Jewish, as they do against minorities. I think that it's a fairly safe bet that not a single West Virginian was ever lynched for being West Virginian.

I'm a big believer in clarity whenever possible.

How am I whining? I wanted to go to film school, so I made it happen, in spite of setbacks. I'm not real thrilled about going to LA, but I'll do what I have to do for my career.

Get off your ass and make it happen. If you don't, blame the man in the mirror and not The Man.
