I'm playing the Open Beta. So far I am not liking it at all. It feels all wrong, and the missions seem really grindy.

Anyone else checking out the Beta or plan to buy the full game at launch?

I have two friends who are playing the open beta too. I was suppose to join them, but I can't seem to get a good torrent and the line at fileplanet keeps screwing up. From what those two say, they like it, so far.

Takes a little bit to get in to it, had it preordered a few months ago when it was cheap

The ship handling gets better the higher the level you go.

Hate the chat setup on it.

A friend just forwarded me an email offering lifetime memberships for Star Trek online for $239.99.

That's fucking obscene. There is no goddamned way I'm paying that much to play a fucking computer game.

I know people who have played World of Warcraft for five years now. If they had a lifetime sub option back then, they would have saved a TON of money.

IF you are gonna stick with the game for that long, the lifetime sub is a good value, believe it or not.

Yeah, well, I'm not sure I have that kind of devotion. I'm already thinking of cancelling my $14.99 D&D Online membership, and it hasn't even been three months. Online play should just come with the 1-time game purchase price, and I'll pay right around fifty bucks for that. This monthly dues bullshit is just shameless ass-rape, and I refuse to play along.

Considering a night out will cost you $15 anyway, a whole month of playtime for that much seems reasonable to me. :P Anywho, y'all playing the beta, let us know if the game sucks! :D

"Lifetime Subscription" is misleading. Lifetime, until people move on to something better and they close down the servers for lack of interest.

I think I'd predict an MMO that lasts 5-10 years about right. Anything more than 10 would be very good for the company.

For an MMO, that is no longer possible, and would have the company lose money, unless the game stayed completely the same. There are always bug fixes, server crashes, and dealing with cheaters to contend with, i.e. policing the game. Plus, the game companies are always adding new content and items for players to collect. I do think they should give more options if you want to play it though.

If I were in charge of an MMO company, I'd let people buy into it charging an hourly rate. And I'd charge like, $1 an hour. Then the casual gamers can choose to pay the monthly $14 fee or play x amount of hours and be billed for x dollars.

How is it shameless assrape? They have to maintain servers, add new in game content, and make a profit.

If you don't want to pay it, fine. To accuse them of assraping you is ghey.

Seriously you shouldn't devote more than two months of regular play to any game.
It can't be good for you.

That's why I stay away from those WoW kind of games like the plague.

    You're just hurting yourself.
EVERYONE on this forum (myself included) should be looking at ways to cut their online time, not drag it out.

I've made good friends playing those games for 1yr+. It also brought my sister and I closer together. There are benefits to these games, despite what the media will tell you.

    It's patching now.
I've never played an MMO before so I expect I'll be back here for help.

To put that into perspective, one year's membership in EVE Online costs about one half of that.

So that would be a worthwhile deal...however, at present it remains to be seen whether Star Trek Online will be a long-term success.

Just downgrade to premium. Use the ponts you have saved up to buy the adventure packs you like, and play pretty much for free.

Also..what server ya on? I play on Cannith right now :)

As for lifetime memberships. They are worth it if you plan on playing a MMO for at least 18 month. I wish EQ, EQ2, and WoW had lifetimes, I would have saved a considerable amount of cash over the past 10 years...

Well, so far it's fucking shit. Left my pc on for the patch to install and it's only managed to do 30%.
    Colour me unimpressed.

Right now it's totally shit, your not getting the mission rewards and it's lagging like a motherfucker when the server isn't crashing.

It's worst then it was in the beta.

The only games that offer a lifetime subscription are the ones that know their game is so bad, they'll never make that up month-to-month.

    Be very, very wary.

Right now it's a waste of money to get, server is crashing all the time now.

So far in the last two hours been able to do one mission with the loading probs and servers dropping.

Man, I want to get this but I don't. Since there won't be free trials for some time, (if ever), I don't want to just jump in and pay $50 for a game and then $15 per month. One guy said "You could just buy the game as it comes with 30 days included", to which I answered, "so you're saying I should pay $50 for a game that I might only play for 30 days." /facepalm
