TL;DR version: The border between Poland and Ukraine is now almost as easy to cross as the borders between EU states. Thus making it more likely that Ukraine will be allowed in the EU.

What is the deal with Henry Kissinger? I can think of three possibilities:

He’s trying to soften his image as a ruthless warmonger.
He’s really that out of touch with the military situation, the resolve of the Ukrainian people, and the current of world opinion.
He and other Davos elites view a swift end to the war, however achieved, as the best shot at getting back to business as usual.

Brutal fighting every day, and no end in sight. It could go on for months.

Allegedly the Russians have somewhat gotten their act together now and are making steady gains. It begins to appear that the Ukrainians will be forced to cede territory as the price for peace.

That will never happen. The Ukrainian people will never give up territory, in order to sue for peace. Any Russian gains now will be temporary, at best, considering what's transpired in the tweet I quoted above you. They're rapidly running out of modern tanks, munitions and above all else, experienced soldiers. Those T-62 tanks will be manned by unmotivated, 45 year old reservists.

    One can only hope...

What is the public opinion in the US regarding this war? After all, the US supplies most of the weapons and is responsible for the infinitely valuable intelligence for the Ukrainian troops. Which costs a gigantic amount of money.... Without the Americans, this war would probably already be lost.

I'm grateful to Biden for putting himself out there. I wouldn't have put it past the old man. Kudos!

But there is always the danger that the Americans will say that this is the Europeans' business. Which is not entirely wrong. But Europe is so pathetically weak militarily. If the US support crumbles, a catastrophe will happen and Ukraine will become "New Russia". Is there a real danger? How strong are the voices calling for the US to stay out of it?

(I actually only came back to wordforge because of this war, to find out what you guys are up to and think about the whole situation.)

America stands with Ukraine. Where I live, Ukrainian flags and other messages of support have become a common sight. Pretty much the only people not on board are perpetual misfits: far-right isolationists and far-leftists who think the U.S. and NATO are always wrong no matter what. Then there are the QAnon crazies who are openly pro-Putin but they live in their own special alternate universe anyway.

    That's a relief! :)

It's actually the same here: only extreme right-wingers and a few lost left-wingers are against arms deliveries. For exactly the same reasons you mentioned. And there are still a few well-meaning but naive intellectuals who think that it is still possible to talk sense with Putin, but first the Ukrainians have to lay down their arms...

Pretty much this. Americans are largely supportive of assistance short of placing our own well-trodden boots on the ground, which Ukraine has explicitly said they don't need anyway.

It's the least we owe them for putting the biggest Putin shill in office and enabling the conditions that allowed this to happen.

Stalin called artillery "The Red God of War." I have a feeling Putin's about to get a taste of why Stalin called it that.
