Accusing me of being a fair weather fan? Please. In the past, when I've enthusiastically rooted for OU, you trotted out the "Gooner" label, and others have ridiculed because OU has fallen short in their last few title game appearances (ridicule that always fails to acknowledge that the Sooners have made it to the national championship game more consistently than any other program over the past 12 years). Now, when I try to play it low-key, I'm accused of being a "front-runner." Where was I last week? Right where I always am - watching the Sooners play, win or lose. I didn't respond to your comment because I'd decided to let the Sooners do their own talking on the field. I was actually surprised they won, given all the circumstances. The stars certainly seemed aligned correctly for a Seminole return to glory.
Okay, I'm convinced. Up until now I've never really sure where Oklahoma fit when it comes to regions of the US. But only a True Southerner could take so much pride in having their ass beat.
Ok flow, it's prediction time. Will OSU's streak of success against A&M continue? This may shock you, but I'm gonna say no. No it will not.
I can not wait for this game. What I love about it is that all the pressure is on A&M, they're picked to win, and when you add in that they're leaving the league it makes it that much more urgent for them. Neither one of us have played anyone worth a damn, we're gonna know so much more about our teams by Saturday night. I liked what Sherman said about conventional wisdom and he thinks it will be a defensive struggle. I've had my dreams crushed on Kyle Field many nights, I'd love to return the favor one last time. I'll pick the Pokes to win for the sake of sport, but this game is gonna be 38-35 in someone's favor.
So it's better to not be good enough to play for a championship vs. make it to the title game even if you lose? What world do you live in? It's all about giving yourself the opportunity to win a title. Do I wish the Sooners had won all those BCS title games? Of course. Am I glad that OU has a coach and a program that's good enough to get to the title game consistently? You bet. The Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos had the same kind of reputation back in the day, one of being good enough to get to the big game but not being good enough to win. I'm pretty sure that never stopped them from trying to get back to the Super Bowl the next year.
The difference being that the NFL has a playoff. So yes, they reasonably were good enough to make it to the big game. In the BCS world, all it means is that you had a weak schedule and can dupe the voters. The fact that the SEC is SEVEN AND ZERO is testament to the strength of the conference. There is a reason we are consistently the only conference to push for a playoff. Whenever we've been allowed to play for the big game we've won. I'll take Auburn's 1-0 record over OUs 1-3 any day.
^^^Umm, the ACC has also been supportive of a playoff, although they liked the 4-team system, which is hardly a playoff at all.
Be my guest. Enjoy Auburn's one title, content in the knowledge they won't be making it back to the championship game for another 25 years. You may be dead by then. OU may not make it to the title game, or they may make it there and lose again, but I can be reasonably certain they'll be back the next year to contend. As for the SEC, yeah they're strong right now. But conference strength waxes & wanes. As for your insinuation that OU wouldn't have made it to those title games if there had been a playoff system, the same speculative arguments could be made of ANY team that gets there under the BCS system. I won't waste time arguing whether OU would have beaten all other top 10 teams in those years on any given day, as such an argument would be pointless. You're going to persist in your anti-OU prejudice no matter what. Maybe we should go back to the old system, where the champion was decided by popular vote amongst sports writers and coaches.
And, just b/c I'm bored: SEC: 7-0 = 100% PAC10: 1-2 = 33.3% ACC: 1-2 = 33.3% BIGE: 1-2 = 33.3% BIG10: 1-2 = 33.3% BIG12: 2-5 = 28.5% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BCS_Championship_Game
We shall see, demographic trends are in our and the SECs favor though. I'd argue that the stats show that the SEC has been under represented in the BCS championship game. Of course you would. OU plays it's best in opinion pieces and polls. Not so hot on the field when it matters though. One of the things that sucks about the Big[-]12[/-]/[-]10[/-]/9 limping along another year is that it just postpones the move the superconferences and a playoff. I look forward to the day.
In the instance I'm thinking of a few years back (07 I believe) when it was put to a vote the SEC was the only one to vote for it. Everyone else was scared of loosing their automatic bowl bid. [edit] Although a quick Google search does say that in 08 it was the SEC and ACC that voted for it.
I totally disagree. If OU was 0-3 or 0-4 then sure I agree with you. Winning one is better than losing all of them, but they have their one and then they have 3 other appearances. Truth be told I would rather go to the championship and lose every year then never go to the championship at all. Being there in that game is better than not being there, no matter how it turns out at least they're getting their shot. I agree a playoff would be better but in the current system I'd rather be given a title shot and lose a bunch of times than get no title shot at all... which is of course the destiny of my school for the long term I'm afraid. My baseball team lost the World Series last year and I was still thrilled that we even made it. I would love to see that happen again, winning it would be better but getting there is awesome.
No such game is recorded as officially having happened. And I don't think 21-14 or 24-14 are embarrassing.
I agree - vintage SMU would have bought a better defense. Hmmmm.....Aggie QB keeper right up the middle, QB goes untouched straight to the end zone. Yep, like I said earlier. Decent offense, no defense. :wehaveawinner:
You know, when I got up this morning I thought the air smelled just perfect for another Gundy September Special. It's good the Cowgirls get the first loss out of the way early, it helps to lower expectations to their proper levels.
LSU bumps OU out of top spot in the AP poll, OSU rises to #5. Can't say I disagree. OU came out fat & lazy against Mizzou and got punched in the mouth hard in that first quarter. The Sooners eventually wore Mizzou down, but certainly didn't dominate.
