Wordforge Is Slow Again

So what's the scoop cause yesterday this board ran slow for me all day. Highly annoying.

We're all grateful for a free host in Lanzman, no doubt, but this is getting unusable.

Put it to you this way: you're about to start losing members.

In that case slow the board even further. I can wait.

If anyone has suggestions on how to reduce io wait times (which seems to be the bulk of the load - I'm never seeing any process except top take over 10%, but %wa is often 10-40%, and I've seen it spike to 100%), I'm all ears.

Are we still being DDoS attacked?

Yes but no longer especially significantly; the attacker has changed tactics and is trying to guess the Administrator password. I'm also trying to install http://www.apsis.ch/pound/ to mitigate the DDoS further, but I'm having trouble configuring it right.

Hmm... Lanzman, did you give any Londoners FTP access? For that matter... is ftp even supposed to be on?

Ban Apostle. That will solve the DDos attack.

As far as I can tell, yes, or at least the password guessing scheme was. They're coming from a static IP provided by as29550.net. Again, however, I don't think that's nearly the problem it has been. Now we're back stuck with a lot of iowait, which is more difficult to counter than actual high CPU load.

iowait is a lot less relevant with new servers than it used to be.

Have you looked at filemon?

We're not on a Windows server.

I haven't given anyone ftp access that I know of. If it's on, prolly oughtta turn it off.

The board is acting slow again. Rep takes forever, loading pages takes forever.

Are the Chinese DDOSing us to get info on Scorponok?

Slow as hell again for me sometimes, and then fast again. And yes, I think the Chinese are behind it. The only solution is to nuke Beijing. From orbit, if possible.

I'm not seeing any slowness whatsoever. In fact, since the downtime the other day (host-related, I assume), it's been faster for me than it has been in months.

I believe that was the host the other day. It resolved itself before I could get to the knobs and levers.

And I've not seen any significant slowdown lately either.

My Vista was updated this morning. Maybe I should blame Bill Gates.

It took me 20 hours to reply to this!

I didn't realize my friendly attempts to guess passwords was causing so much problems.
Maybe if I ran through a proxy based here in the US it would help speed things up.

Or just email me the site passwords directly.

I'm hitting a major slowdown right now.
