It's been ultraslow tonight. I've had several posts that have taken 2-3 minutes to load. Rep is slow too.

Pages loading take about 3-5 minutes each, rep takes a minute to see the rep box, this morning getting onto the Wordforge main page took about 8 minutes. My connection is very solid and secure, blazing fast everywhere else, it's only here that this slow down is taking place.

    Same here.

It's still very intermittent, too. One minute, the pages and rep load instantly. A little while later and it takes several minutes for them to change.

I blame the ghost of the SHARE button. :bailey:

What part of "We're under a DDoS attack" (specifically a SYN flood) is unclear? There may be something the host can do about this, but there's nothing we can.

Well forgive me for thinking that after a week we wouldn't be under a DDoS attack. Either the host must have pissed in somebody's Wheaties, or they're a shit host. Seriously. A week? That's inexcusable on the part of the host.

Well, the part where I don't know what the fuck a "DDoS attack" is, for starters.

A DoS attack is a Denial of Service attack. It is when someone uses a whole bunch of computers (usually hacked Chinese and Russian ones with pirated versions of Windoze with no security updates since the early 2000's) and searches/surfs your site with impunity, slowing it down to a crawl.

Remember during the Sept 11th attacks and how hard it was to get onto sites like CNN and Fox? That was because too many people were visiting those sites at the same time, and that is what is happening here. Except it isn't real people, but hijacked computers doing the visiting.

Anyways, that is what a DoS attack is. I have no idea what a DDoS attack is, and how serious the extra D is. :borg:

As Armalyte said, 'distributed.' Essentially means that a bunch of infected machines, called a botnet, are all making hits on the web host's servers, and because the net of bad requests is so large, it's very difficult to block effectively.

    Just FYI:

I'm getting 18.5mbps down/3.5mbps up from a test server in the same city that WF is hosted in, every other application and website are working wonderfully for me, and it's still taking 1+ minutes for each WF page to load at 0110CST.

What's the solution to the problem? Are you suppose to go in and block each and every IP hitting the site?

I think Apostle's "solution" is to move the board to a dedicated physical server, possibly but not necessarily one provided by him, where we wouldn't be dependent on a third-party webhost to handle functions we should be looking after ourselves.

I don't disagree with that, but the cost is a question to be looked at, as well as "who do you trust to have that level of access". If I took Apostle up on his offer of a private server, how many of you guys would be comfortable with that?

Do it and watch the board membership melt away. Apostle needs to be kept a billion miles away from ever thinking of touching Wordforge inner programming. I'd trust teh Baba before him.

How much server do we need? You could probably host this site on a laptop with a static ip address. :ramen:

How much does a dedicated physical server cost?

It seems most of the reasons why Wordforge sucks now is due to technical issues.

At this stage of the game, your solution has nothing to do with a dedicated server. If this is being caused by a DDos attack, that will follow you wherever you go.

A competent host is the solution.

If you want a good host who protects their VPS servers, I can recommend inmotionhosting.com. They were fantastic when I last used them.

Symatech endpoint blocked a whole bunch of trojan horse stuff it found when I tried to open the smilies list tonight. Just sayin'.

Edit: Around 45-46 of 'em. I'm running the scan & Ad-Aware again right now.

Hi, I was wondering if this is being looked into? If you guys plan on having Wordforge run like this forever, I might have to evaluate the amount of time I waste here waiting for things to load.
