The same friend told me an interesting story that sheds a great deal of light on people's thought processes.

When his mother's sister and her husband reached retirement age, they decided to go on a trip. They went to a travel agency, and the agency was proposing trips to Hawaii. They reasoned that if the agency was offering to arrange for them to go there, the place must actually exist. So they signed up for the trip, went there, took pictures, and came back.

My friend's mother refused ever afterwards to even look at the pictures. To her, it was intolerable that her own sister was trying to play such a cruel trick on her. Since it was obvious that Hawaii does not exist, any claims that pictures are of Hawaii are of course fakes. And fakes don't prove anything. QED, provided you start with the (unprovable) presupposition that what you have not personally experienced does not exist.

It would have been quite impossible for her sister to "take her there," since she would refuse to be "taken in" for such a trip.

It is actually the same way with knowing God. It's not that it's hard to know God; in fact, it's ridiculously simple. If someone really wants to know God, God is more than capable of making Himself known to that person. But the problem is that no one can be "taken there" against his will, or even while remaining skeptical. You have to be open-minded enough to really say, "God, if you are there, I would like to know it. Honestly."

Now, anyone can say those words. But not many people are ready to really mean them. Because if God really is there and knowable, His existence has incredible implications in the meaning of life and the nature of the human experience. Most people are not actually opposed to the existence of God because of intellectual problems with the concept (though they may well have convinced themselves that is their objection), but because of the implications of God getting personally involved in our lives.

I have sometimes said that knowing God is kind of like having an elephant around the house. You can't just "hide him in a corner." By His very nature, He is God (quite obviously). He is in charge. Sure, He directs according to perfect love and perfect wisdom and perfect holiness, but that in no way implies that He directs according to what we want. So, to most people, the choice is rather to find a way to justify the refusal to let God be in charge.

That, in fact, is the very definition of sin. Lots of people talk about sin as if it was a question of what you do. But that is nonsense. A lot of people who don't know or care anything about God are as nice, and do things that are just as morally upstanding, as Christians. Sin, in the end, is the refusal to let God be God in our lives.

And until someone is honestly willing to at least find out if it is worthwhile to "let God be God in our lives," there just isn't any good way to "take him there."
