It's actually insane that the voting can theoretically happen in perpetuity until a majority is reached. House business is at a complete standstill until a speaker is chosen. These last six years have really shown some of the antiquated cracks in America's system of democracy.
The current crop of republicans don't care about governing so that's not a really big deal to them. They'd rather be Fox-famous than actually govern Totally
EXCLUSIVE: Former President Trump declined to say if he's sticking by his endorsement of Kevin McCarthy for speaker tonight, telling me in a brief phone interview he's had calls all day asking for support, and "We'll see what happens. We'll see how it all works out." When I asked directly if he was sticking by McCarthy, who did not clinch the gavel today after three floor votes, Mr. Trump told me "we'll see what happens," and ended our conversation. https://twitter.com/garretthaake/status/1610408754721218561
While McCarthy is an unprincipled, craven coward, and not exactly a genius-level IQ, I assume he is not completely stupid, and therefore is aware that loyalty, where Trump is concerned, is a one-way street.
The last 4 GOP speakers all resigned before their expected time, three of them didn't run for election after that. This was a bullshit job 20 years ago. Now it's insanity.
Sounds like a Republican wet dream, shutting down half of a branch of government for no reason. Wouldn't put it past them for this to be a strategy, considering they've held the country hostage before with budget shutdowns.
Also fun, watching Gaetz, Gosar and company going over to the Dems and trying to get help from AOC, no doubt seeing if they can pry votes from the Squad. She's literally laughing in their faces. Normally we wouldn't see this on CSPAN, because the Speaker controls the cameras. However, there is no speaker at the moment.
AOC's "you fucking moron" face is on point. https://twitter.com/RonFilipkowski/status/1610375672001712128
I believe it’s the Clerk of the House. FWIW that’s how it was done in Hillsborough County, FL when I was there
So how long can we go? Can we break the record, with 134 votes in 1855? Let's play Speakership roulette! Where the House always looses!
17 of the Republicans who voted against McCarthy had gotten donations from his PAC in the last election cycle. https://www.axios.com/2023/01/04/kevin-mccarthy-speaker-donations-republicans Fucker’s so pathetic he can’t even buy votes!
It is, Cheryl Lynn Johnson, a 62 year old black woman appointed by Pelosi. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheryl_Johnson
And now let's play a game called 'Let's go over and see how the party faithful are reacting on Fox News Facebook.' Hmm. Oh. Snort. Chuckle. LOL. Bwahah. Bwahahahahhaah. BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAHAHAH! Ah, that was life-affirming. My last post there: I can't believe 200 RINOs!!!! voted for McCarthy, after he said Trump was paid by Putin AND! said Trump was responsible for Jan 6th. We need a new party NOW!
Also amusing - Gaetz filed an official complaint the McCarthy moved into the Speakers office with the Capitol Architect. These guys are burning bridges that can never be repaired. The hate is tangible! Awww, too bad!
As much as he's a kiddly-diddling piece of shit, Gaetz ain't wrong on this one. Although it is delicious to see them starting to feed on each other.
Has there been any news reports as to whether McCarthy's move to the Speaker's Office was authorized by Congressional administrative staff and, if so, why? Seems to me like there's been some shenanigans. Perhaps some Congressional staff, including the Architect, need to find new jobs.
The Architect of the Capitol (AOC, the official designation, LOL) was put in place by Trump in 2019. And that's one of the three member board that ensures the safety of the capitol. The other 2 resigned after Jan 6th. The current guy, Brett Blanton, has already been called to task for multiple misuses of work resources (he gives capitol cars to his family) and has misrepresented himself as a police officer. Same as it ever was.
Wait a sec... there are only 212 Democrats in the House. Which Republican voted for Jeffries on the 2nd ballot?
I just realized I failed to remind everyone on this new page of the thread that I called this shit half a year ago:
so technically we have a unicameral Congress right now, yes? Too bad the Senate can't just pass a bunch of stuff and say "well there is no House we we're just gonna send this over to Biden"
