    Yup.

I broke the rules and got banned for it. That's fair.

Someone else did the same thing, they got banned for it. That's fair.

I agree. I know quite a few names of the people I PM with, and I would never reveal them. But I wouldn't cry like a little bitch if my name did get out.

I don't even list any personal information on my website.

One clear result of this thread: No one would have guessed anything of 14thDoc's personal information before, despite the (admittedly inappropriate) troll, but now it is common knowledge for everyone.

It would appear that getting someone banned was more important than preventing the information from being made public.

If someone did the same thing to me (though how someone could post pictures that would reveal that my first name is really "Wladislaw" I'm not really sure) I think I would just ignore it until they either got tired of it, or did something so flagrant that intervention was necessary.

    Yep.

I had to specifically ask what the picture meant. Had no idea it was revealing any supposed 'personal' info.

It seems that the only person here who released personal information about 14thDoctor was 14thDoctor himself.

    Ironic.

I don't know whether it was the main intention, but it certainly was the outcome. If that doesn't tell us the rule as it currently stands is bad, I don't know what will.

Actually, what it tells us is that if your goal is to protect personal information that has inadvertently gotten out and is being used so subtly that no one could possibly understand it, making a big stink about it in order to try to get them banned is not wise. Just ignoring it is the best course, as in most cases of trolling.

It's not the rule that's bad, it's trying to use that rule to get someone banned for something that is really a minor point that is not too rational.

Not getting how it's trolling and why such a shitstorm erupted, but oh well.

Guess it really was subtle. Or only something those who know the real name *before* the picture was posted got. :unuts:

Edit: Nevermind. I think some of those above descriptions were wrong. I just got the one thing they seem to have in common, at least the ones that I can identify.

    Carry on! :D

I'm curious how any of the staff thought that this was a good idea??? There's no good judgment on display here whatsoever.

Extend your curiosity to the entire membership, can you understand why anyone would think this was a good idea?

Cuz it's all great fun until you're on the receiving end. Then it's time to run to the management screaming "Help me! Help me!"

Which is one of the main things that drove us out of TrekBBS.

    Yeah but see you're smart.

    14th Doctor isn't smart.

He and most of the left on this board are professional whiners. They are not able to keep quiet when in this situation.

    I resent that that remark.

And no, I don't resemble it and anyone trying to use that line is as lame as the line itself.

It might have been funny the first time it was used about a hundred years ago, but it has since lost effectiveness in an arguement.

The current similiarities between TBBS and WF are quite startling.

Like 14thDoctor, Jamey Whistler was trolling with personal info. And, like 14thDoctor, it's completely implausible that he didn't know exactly what he was doing. And, like 14thDoctor, so long as no one raised a stink and connected the dots, we were perfectly happy to try to contain the situation with a few PM's and let the idiocy run its course with no one being the wiser. But then, like with 14thDoctor, Zombie (I think... someone by the end of the first page of this thread, anyway) came in and connected the dots. To me, it seems patently unfair to ban a person for just doing that, so whoever posted the personal info troll to begin with must be, and so, like 14thDoctor, Jamey Whistler was banned.

Of course, if 14thDoctor actually cared about protecting personal information rather than getting someone banned, he would have known, given his own experience, not to say anything if he thought someone was being trolled in a signature.

That makes 14thDoctor either quite mean, or rather forgetful.

It makes him quite mean when you realize that from his own experience he knew the perfect way to get Jamey banned. Make a public shitstorm demanding Jamey be banned on revealing personal info, be coy with the evidence, and then force everyone into the making the connection making you mods ban Jamey.

So now that 14thDoctor has made his name a matter of public knowledge on WF, I will use it freely without fear of repercussion.

Where's the smoking gun on this claim? Or rather, does it exist?

This is about the only piece I feel I'm still missing out on, here. Or maybe I've forgotten it in the midst of all the silliness and vague posts.

Is there evidence/proof that Jamey could have figured out 14thDoctor's info? Is there even a trail of evidence that strongly suggests a cause-and-effect leading from motivation to deliberate trolling? Any comments from Jamey that show anything like clear intent on his part?

I don't care how smart he is, I don't care that he's played with people's personal info before, I don't care for the moment about 14thDoctor having apparently pulled something similar before. That's all circumstantial evidence and in the past for the moment, as far as I'm concerned. Does the clearer evidence exist, or not? If it does, then whether bannable or not, he wasn't being very bright or doing the board any good. (No, putting a time bomb in your sig is not a bright idea.)

    Stupid, stupid decision.

I don't see how it was "revealing personal information" when 99% of the board had no idea what "personal information" was being revealed.

Thanks to 14thDoc, though, we all do now!

    Way to go, sport!
