In 1970s Canada, so did we. I was in cubs for a few years (8-10) and they gave us the basics of riflery and archery.
A few years later and army cadets-same thing. Small arms classes twice a month, weekly target practice with converted Enfields (.22) in a local high school's basement range. Hell, they'd issue us an FN for cadet camp (15). No ammo, of course, unless we were on range. Point is, we learned responsible gun use rather than to romanticize them...

FOr all that I favour restricting what type of guns are available to the public and who should be allowed to own'em/carry in public, I'll advocate for teaching firearm handling and safety at a young age.

We should just teach it in school along with sex education because parents have just given up on it because they don't want to have either talk.

Where's the original study? Newsweek just links to CBS which doesn't cite any sources. Also not stated: what used to be ahead of gun deaths and what is now. It's all well and good to be hand-wringing over this now, but if the rates of gun deaths haven't changed (CBS says they hit an all-time low in 2013 and have come back up a bit since) while the rates of all the former causes of death have gone down, this is overall a net positive even if it increases the percentage of deaths that are by gun.

Consider that once self-driving cars become ubiquitous, auto accident deaths will drop to near-zero. Then with no change, guns will become #2 (assuming accidents are now, from another post in this thread), and a much higher percentage, despite the world getting safer, even if the actual rate of gun deaths decreases moderately!

Yeah, I'm pro-choice and always have been even during my conservative phase, but there's a middle ground between Ireland laws and women using it as their main form of birth control. Those with multiple abortions are the exception to be sure, but they do exist.

There are people who are not pro abortion for themselves but grasp the fact that its not, nor should be legislated put of existence. @Muad Dib was one of those.

FWIW, I'm fine with teaching gun safety in schools. Since its like pulling teeth to get anyone to reconsider any other safety measures...if I can't have perfect, I'll settle for the option they'll do less damage. And maybe in twenty years, we'll have a generation with a better appreciation for gun safety so fewer such tragedies happen.

they can join the military. Heck you can join the military at 16 with parents/guardian permission. You can also be declared an emancipated minor and make your own decisions including agree to get married or enter into contracts.
