 At least you're honest about your agenda, that's more than the talking heads on MSNBC will offer.

And how exactly would you achieve your goal of "dramatically reduce the number of guns" in the United States?

Have law enforcement go door to door and confiscate them? I realize that's your wet dream, but you must know it will never, ever happen. :)

It checks off all the boxes. Maybe it's all true, but we know how this usually goes. It usually takes days to figure out what happened.

I dunno about "all" of the boxes. Just those three boilerplates (although I thought gun grabbers were people who supported making it harder for angry adolescents to get guns?).
Is Russophile being established other than him fanboying for a brand?

If I thought you or anyone else here was interested in intelligent conversation, I'd spend a few minutes answering those questions.

Since I know better than to think that, I won't waste the time.

What I'll say right now is that in most cases, "mental illness" is being confused with "emotional disturbance." Mental illness suggests chronic, pervasive conditions (like schizophrenia, or severe bipolar disorder) that should be treated with medication. Or perhaps severe personality disorders characterized by sociopathy and anti-social traits, conditions that have no "cure," but which can possibly be managed by intensive, long-term therapy.

Emotional disturbance suggests maladaptive coping strategies for emotional upset, re: dysfunctional and/or violent acting out. "I hate my parents, they took my cellphone away because I'm flunking all my classes, my girlfriend is cheating on me, I hate authority because my dad told me I have to get a job this summer, the world sucks, so I'm gonna shoot some people."

    Sorry...I meant gun nuts.

Then why go out of the way to explain what a Makarov is?

Everyone agrees that guns should be kept out of the hands of crazy people. Banning/eliminating guns completely in the US would keep them out of the hands of everybody (including cops thank goodness because they slaughter civilians, and if civilians won't have guns since they are banned cops will have nothing to fear!) thus crazy people won't have access to what doesn't exist, right? :chris:We can't ban crazy people, because crazy has been around a lot longer than guns and it's never going away! So maybe we can make it easier and faster for teachers, parents, doctors, concerned citizens in general to contact the authorities who can legally take/keep the guns away from the possibly crazy people. If the guns will never be returned (no doubt the suspected crazy is indeed a certified crazy!) then the gun owners will be compensated at full market value. I feel that mandatory gun safety training is a great idea - we need training & testing to drive a car, then we can take training & testing to handle/own a gun. That might limit the stupid people from shooting up the joint, but not the crazies. And already know keeping guns out the hands out of hard-core criminals is impossible because (spoiler alert) criminals don't seem to give a shit about laws. :( But since this thread isn't about criminals or cops with guns (both often discussed on wordforge) we need to solve the problem of keeping crazy people away from guns.

If we could wave a magic wand and no crazy person (who isn't also a criminal) ever touches a gun in the US it might prevent 2 percent or so of the gun deaths.

There is a difference in Midwest and southern kids, but not too much. When I was in the Carolinas we were eating at a diner attached to a hotel with a large hall. One night they were hosting a high school dance. It sounded like firecrackers outside and when we came out the cops were there because some kid came there and started shooting his gun. I actually thought it might be firecrackers because it was through a couple of doors and a music I heard it from. It was some kids in the parking lot and no one was hit because I guess they must have fired to scare people. Had they shot into the place I could not imagine there was enough room for a bullet, or multiple, to travel across the ballroom without hitting people.

There was nothing weird about that night. No one even told us to clear out of the diner area. I am not even sure the dance shut down. The cops outside were all running about, but everyone went on with what they were doing. This was the middle of rural north Carolina far enough outside of Charlotte you were in farm country again. Maybe the kids are different enough they shot in the air and not into the crowd, but they ripped of a bunch of shots. It is just a matter of aim at that point. How long before those kids change and shoot into the crowd?

I used to live in Coral Springs. My kid went to school there. We knew people in Stoneman. Very upscale neighborhood, at least when I lived dthere.

Yeah, S. Fl is batshit crazy. I lived in an upper middle class neighborhood in Coral Springs and the SWAT team came to OUR door once. We had to sit in the dark front garage while they spied on our backdoor neighbor, who shot a gun at his wife.

A few years later, a guy suicided right in our development, on the fucking street.

And later, a police mini-tank rolled down the street and they bashed in the door of a house to get someone. That's not counting a "grow house" by the pool.

All of this in a GOOD neighborhood, so I can back up the other S. Floridian in this thread.

It's why I'm the fuck out of there.

Still shocked though. These are my people and I hope no one I know lost someone. Even if not, it's still just ghastly.

My agenda and wet dream?

Check the location man, we already have that gun control, I'm not spending my time fantasising about US domestic laws. If you can come up with a solution for stopping innocent people being massacred and it involves every man and his donkey having a private arsenal I'd still consider it a good outcome.

When I was in high school in the early to mid 1980s, when deer season rolled around every late fall, it wasn't unusual for guys out in the parking lot (alongside the school) to be taking their rifles out of their trucks before school and showing them off. No one so much as blinked over that.

OMFG the shooter owned a RUSSIAN made gun? :scary: Well that seems mighty suspicious. Russian made guns surely must be rare as hen's teeth here in the US.
It's worse than I thought.....I work with guys who own Russian/commie made guns....:calli: Where would they possibly find them? Certainly only through Donald Trump's secret stash buried deep within NRA headquarters!

When we moved to Australia in 1995 one of my favourite things was how in the middle of the night the flight attendant took me upstairs and I got to spend time in the cockpit chatting with the captain of the 747.

yes Dayton I went to HS in the mid-late 70's in Wisconsin and same deal - hunting was common and many kids & students hunted right after school so they kept their weapons in their cars - never a problem.

Rock hill south Carolina. There is a cluster of hotels in that area just off the highway. It is a commuter town to Charlotte just over the border. Most of the people in the area are working people with jobs. There are a couple of colleges which is why the hotels are there. If you go five minutes down the road away from the highway you are in woodland. They actually have a ton of outdoor camping and national whitewater where they train for kayaking in the Olympics on a huge nature park is right up the road. It is well away from the bad areas of Charlotte, but evidently not enough. There are a ton of white legal gun owners up there as hunting and fishing are extremely common.

It is kids with guns. Kids are prone to emotional outbursts. Even the decent ones have their moments where things get too hairy for them. I assume that night it was just some school kids who had a gun scaring the hell out of their friends. There may have been some high school drama associated with it. The cops were not overly concerned about whoever it was coming back, but they had the parking lot loaded. The kids would have been really stupid to come back, but still no one even said a thing to the packed diner. I think it might have been a dennys at that point. It went through some changes. The hotel owner said that they would never host a school dance again after that.

From what I am reading about this Cruz kid he was a fucking obvious shooter. Racists postings and some rather large hatred being stoked by trump and alt right rhetoric. This one is another right wing wacko. Where are the antifa terrorists that match this shit? Oh yeah, they do not exist.

Yes Bailey times change. These days it's not unusual for 10 year old schoolgirls to use high powered rifles to hunt deer with adult supervision.
So far none have went on school shooting rampages, at least here in Georgia. Any thoughts? Yes school shootings happen and it's tragic. Millions of people shoot guns safely & responsibly every day but just ignore that fact.

So again we come around to the thing that used to make @evenflow have shitfits every time I mentioned it: What are you responsible gun owners doing to watch out for and weed out the crazies?

You'd have no compunction about confiscating the keys of a drunk driver. I assume if one of your neighbors showed an inordinate interest in underage kids, you'd do something about that. But you've claimed in the past that you don't know ANYONE who's EVER been irresponsible with a gun, so I guess you can't do anything about that.

Statistically speaking, we might want to consider allowing the 10-year-old schoolgirls to have whatever rifles they want, and just keep the guns away from the boys.

It is off to the west if I remember right. The opposite side was the raceway and really big mall. If rock hill is rough for you then you then this school where the shooting today happened was a war zone. I am sure the area has some local kids who are annoying, but it is not like it was south tryon by the amtrack station. Kids around that area are actually pretty polite and people were petty damned nice. The people there made you want to be happy and help out. There was some stupid driving, but you are really getting off into nowhere around there.
