^It's pretty fun. If you can afford to blow $50, you should try it out. I think the nicest thing about this is you can just log on for an hour, kill some Klingons, and call it a day, and you'll still progress. And besides that, it's nice to be able to visit all the planets we grew up watching on TV.
What kind of game is it? Is it a big galaxy you wonder around running missions? Do you work together? How do you progress? Tell me it's not an RPG in any way please. I hate RPGs.
Then you're out of luck. It's an MMORPG. You run around doing your thing from the third-person perspective. Yes, it's a huge galaxy and they've said that they'll expand it as the game progresses. You can work solo, just you and your ship, or you can work together. The fleet engagements are A LOT of fun, IMHO. I was in one earlier today in the Laurentian system and we had about 20 Federation starships that came together to protect the Starbase from a massive Klingon invasion fleet of 50 Birds-of-Prey, 36 Cruisers (of various classes), and 12 Negh'Var class Battleships. I warped into the system not knowing what to expect and I'm so very glad it was from the third-person perspective. Off in the distance you could see the major furball and all the weapons streaks going back and forth. It was probably the most fun I've ever had playing a video game.
I'm danleach@Dan Leach. At least I think I am USS Richmond (I had a fight with the random name generator and lost)
[?=Lt. Dudley "Mush" Morton][/?] [?=U.S.S. Essex (NCC-93554)][/?] Mush@Dudley_Morton Thanks to A LOT of help from friends, I'm now a Lt. 9. I hope to reach Lt. Cmdr. and have my bright and shiny new Constitution-Refit in <72 hours.
How do the battles work? I suppose if you're playing from the Captains perspective it might not be bad. I just don't like having to sit and take turns fighting. I like the action to proceed in real time and the timing of decisions to make a difference.
Didn't see it. Might not have stayed up long enough. The only thing you wait for is weapon recharge and enemies moving into your firing arcs. If the game is tracking damage and XP by the "turn", it's not apparent while you play. The space combat in particular is exactly the kind of smooth, real-time "maneuver and fire" 3-D playing this kind of game needs to be fun.
So, I find a mail station, use that to send mail to people who need help by using 'charactername@username' and I can attach things i no longer need?
I believe so. Received some shields and whatnot from a friend that way. Here's something funky I ran into last night, guys. Maybe it's not a glitch, but big ships like Negh'vars with a "+" rating next to their hull type were killing my little light cruiser in about two shots. First one took down the facing shield grid, second one blew me the fuck up. Had to abandon a mission I'd nearly completed because I was unable to blow up some alien race leader's battleship. Couldn't even register any damage on him.
The + or - shows you how many levels above or below your level the oponent is, so +3 is 3 levels above you... Original Connie sighting: Me in battle:
Ah, so "+48" might be what the deductive-minded might call a "clue," then? Guess I need to fleet up to take on those bad boys. I see those original Constitutions pretty frequently.
Wtf. This game is Bridge Commander on crack?! What I saw in that video is Bridge Commander with good graphics. Phaser arcs, targeting, etc. is all about the same. 0_o Don't get me wrong, BC was fun, but is ST Online really THAT much better that you'd pay $50 AND a monthly fee?
No, you can beam down to planets on away missions, you can explore the unexplored sections of the galaxy, and when you find new species, initiate first contact. You can beam down to Starbases and buy new weapons, supplies for medical missions (I did one where you had to stop a plague), ferry Ambassadors from one planet to the next, it's not just "Bridge Commander" on crack. There's a lot more to it, and they're adding more even now. It is a lot of fun. Here are a few screenshots (there is a user interface, but my ss doesn't show it). The USS Axiom approaching an unknown planet in a newly discovered star system: Bridge of the USS Axiom: Approaching K-7 to get supplies: Beaming down to K-7: Saving an outpost from Orion raiders: An away team fleet operation with other starship Captains to halt a Klingon offensive: My crew and I beam down to a hostile planet to save hostages. I decide to stop at Risa on the way back. I need a vacation.

Just to let you know in case you didn't already: You don't automatically get a promotion at lieutenant 10. I was halfway into lieutenant 11 before the admiral hailed me and asked me to go back to stardock for commendation. You first have to spend all your skill points on yourself (which I did). But what ended up triggering it was finishing the first or second mission Admiral Quinn has available. I spent a few hours trying everything to get a promotion, then as soon as I finished the first mission Quinn gave, he hailed me and I got the promo. I admit this game has really grown on me. When you start off, you only get 2 forward weapons and one aft. So battles kind of became repetitive. But since I got my new ship, I now have pulse phasers in one slot, phaser banks in the other, and a quantum torp launcher in the third. This, along with ordering your tactical officers to either load torpedo spreads, or high yield torpedos, along with using evasive manoevers, getting them to brace for impact (to lessen crew deaths), using shield batteries, engine boosts or weapon batteries, along with a growing list of things you have to do in battle, is making you have to think and work to gain any advantage you can in a fight, and keeping your fingers really busy. Here are two additional screens. One is my new ship, the USS Scorpion, with some friends, and the second is a mining planet the Gorn attacked and they want you to save.
I dinged Captain last night. Anybody else a captain? If ao we ahould do some group pvp. My fleet does premade groups a lot and it's a blast.
I was thinking the game scaled the competition to your skill level so it wasn't impossible outside of Fleet Actions or PvP. Something happened last night to confirm that for me. I was playing with a friend that was +24. We were in the Briar Patch and couldn't use full-impulse. He ended up getting 20km ahead of me so I couldn't work with him in the fights. He didn't need my help. He just waltzed through the competition that had been scaled to my level and I just strolled in behind to collect the victory.
