Its been confirmed at SW Celebration that "Rogue One", takes place between "Sith", and "A New Hope", and is about the stealing of the Death Star plans. Also, the standalones have been officially titled the "anthology", films. So, lets have a new thread be born.
Also, "anthology", will be in the titles to separate them from the main saga. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/36623/-rogue-one-story-details-confirmed
Sweet. So all it took was George Lucas selling the franchise for Star Wars to finally get its shit together.
Given how shitty the video is, I'm not surprised. It appears to be a camera zooming in through a forest to reveal the faint outline of the Death Star in orbit around the planet.
I hate prequels. You already know that the plans make it to the rebels so you've lost any suspense. Boring! At least the other prequels had the intrigue of how Anakin turns into Vader to keep you excited. Despite how pathetically Lucas botched that, we had no way of knowing that in advance. Well, I mean, besides the first 2 train wrecks. There was always a chance that the 3rd movie would have been okay. The 2nd was an improvement over Phantom Menace.
I will never ever ever ever ever understand why content provider block ads and commercials on copyright grounds... Shouldn't they be trying to get EVERYONE to see it no matter how? (yeah, I know sometimes they are lame and put new trailers in front of movies first. That's pathetic if you have so little faith in your movie you have to use a trailer for a different movie to get people to go see it)
I know I've mentioned this before, but the IMAX version of AOTC was completely re-edited for the format and almost all of the shite romance stuff was cut. The movie was actually quite tolerable as a result. I've never seen the IMAX version anywhere else (including the torrent-verse) since it was in theatres. It's too bad. If Disney had any smarts they'd destroy every existing copy of AOTC and replace it with the IMAX version.
Disney has made some excellent prequels. Try out Lion King 1.5 some time, and you'll see what I mean. Yeah, there won't be suspense in the final outcome, but background exposition can be quite enjoyable in my opinion. I mean, think about it this way -- we knew in the original trilogy that the main characters were pretty unlikely to be killed, but the movies were enjoyable just the same. How do they steal the plans? Who was involved that might surprise our preconceived notions? Etc. Plus, eye candy.
You kinda know you're position is weak when you're relying on Lion King 1.5 to support your argument!
Screenwriter reaches out to Neil deGrasse - Tyson for advice http://www.ew.com/article/2015/06/02/star-wars-neil-degrasse-tyson-help
That's a fair point. I think Lucas just made a mistake in how far back he chose to start with Episode 1. The only thing consequential to come out of that movie was palpatine becoming chancellor and obi wan getting permission to train anakin. The clone wars don't even start until the end of the next movie so TPM was really a waste of time in the grand scheme of things.
Clearly, he couldn't get the Clone Wars and Anakins' fall to fill out 3 movies, so he was like, "well, for movie 3, I'll do a prequel to those prequels". Funny other writers got a whole TV series out of the fucking Clone Wars, but he had to cheat it with filler.
Given that the best film of the OT was the one he had the least involvement in, this shouldn't be all that surprising.
There's debate about it being "all him." Supposedly, the studio had the script "polished" by someone else. That being said, Lucas deserves considerable credit for the film, regardless if the script was 100% him or not, and it doesn't undermine the revolutionary aspects of the film at all. One thing that would be interesting to know is how many films produced in '77 made reference to Star Wars. In the film Hardcore, starring George C. Scott, and shot in '77, has a sequence where as Scott is heading into a strip club, you can see a giant "Star Wars" billboard, then, inside the strip club, a pair of strippers are performing with lightsabres and capes. I can't imagine that its the only film to do this.
Okay, let's make this thread the home of all anthology trilogy news... Anthology 2 is going to be the long rumored and wanted/dreaded Han Solo prequel. http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/37734/lord-miller-to-helm-han-solo-movie The Josh Trank movie was going to be something else, but that's deleted now.
Bad, bad idea. If they had to do a classic character, I would've preferred one about Obi-wan Kenobi, filling in the gap between RotS and ANH. I can see Ewan MacGregor playing a dissolute, vagabond ex-Jedi roaming the Outer Rim, getting into trouble (a la Mad Max).
Well, they might throw us some curve balls. Like, what if he grew up a fop with a Brit accent, and a poofy shirt, and a powdered wig, and cut down his enemies with witty bon mots, and then in the last 30 minutes, he's bitten by a dying radioactive John Wayne, turns into Han, and then all the Jabba and Boba Fett stuff before ANH happens.
