The quote I posted is a refrain from Trump’s acceptance speech at the 2016 GOP convention. To me, it embodies the essence of fascism: a call to embrace an idealized leader figure who could cast aside all doubts and complexities and restore the nation to greatness — if only he were granted absolute power. Agree or disagree?
Fair, but looking at the original.thread it seems like you were the one who brought them up to make your case. So leaving any discussion of particular individuals, friends, or family out of it, also not saying it applies to any particular politician, is it reasonable to attach the fascist labels to people who are ok with fascism and support fascists?
I think it’s egotistical and narcissistic. I doubt anyone truly belies that only Trump can get things l. I’d like to know what he was planning on fixing.
I’d agree with that and I think a lot of his supporters are authoritarian types who value law and order and the military. They also support strengthening our borders and other general Republican planks in the platform and that’s why they voted for him, not because they wanted to reign in the third reich.
Trump himself surely believed it. Millions of Americans remain devoted to the idealized leader figure they imagine he is. These are avenues to be exploited for those who seek power beyond accountability (i.e. fascists). “The system.” The vaguest of terms, laden with emotional significance. Another hallmark of fascism.
I’d like to think Ron Paul or Tulsi Gabbard could fix the system, but I know they can’t do it alone. Trump had both houses and still couldn’t kill Obamacare, all it took was John McCaine to stop him.
No question about that, but if I recall correctly, Republicans shrieked that a public option would be socialism, blah blah blah.
In fact, I believe that when the idea of changing the healthcare system in the US back in the mid-90s without a public option was proposed, someone with the initials of HRC was said to have responded with, “Are you out of your fucking mind?” and was soundly criticized for saying “fucking”. Meanwhile, her husband was accused of being pussywhipped for considering what his wife said.
Other things Republicans have complained were socialism over the past century: . Social Security . Medicare . Medicaid . the FDIC . interracial marriage Definitely not socialism: . Corporate welfare for military industrial complex . Farm subsidies for red states . Red states generally being welfare queens vis a vis federal revenues and benefits . Jingoistic displays expressing love of the state
The problem I have with the term "fascism" is it's pretty vague. Here's the wiki blurb: I think we need a better term but failing that, "far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalism" does nicely. I don't think Trump fits this. He's an opportunistic con-man that ran the country like he did his businesses (badly). His followers though are into far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalism and he fed off this (see rallies) and encouraged it as a means to stay in power. If he wasn't such an idiot he might have done much better at it.
In actuality, France faces much the same problems as here. https://wapo.st/3silltw The TLDR is Bender is mayor of a French town with a nuclear plant.
LOL at "all three branches of government" anyone who doesn't know THAT is bullshit is probably one of those idiots who think the House and Senate are different branches.
Well @Rimjob Bob is one of our premier village idiots. Thanks for noticing, I only half pay attention to what he is saying and completely missed the obvious.
So, back on topic... what the fuck is up with Joe Manchin? Why doesn't he just cross the floor (or whatever it's called in Yankeedom when a politician switches parties)?
Even the coal miner's union is trying to talk sense to him. https://thehill.com/business-a-lobb...coal-miners-union-urges-manchin-to-reconsider
Manchin doesn't care. He, like trump, thinks coal miners like being coal miners. Neither, nor many others, understand that most, if not all, would gladly work somewhere else if they had the option. Yes, they are all proud to be coal miners - in the same way people are proud of they work they do when the work is physically hard. I don't know any man who is not happy to show off the wood pile they just spent a month chopping and splitting and stacking. That doesn't change the fact that they bitched about having to do it ever minute that they were doing it.
