More a reference to the favorable ignorance that the NCAA seems to be granting the USC in house investigation of Reggie Bush, when other schools have gotten minor probation for similar player misconduct in the recent past.
My understanding is that yes, Reggie's family got improper benefits, but it was in an endeavour to sign Reggie away from the school. I don't think you can hold USC responsible - if anything, it hurt them, not helped them. You can hold Reggie Bush responsible, but now that he's graduated the NCAA has no hold over him. So that's going to be that. It's not like the Rhett Bomar incident, where the guy was getting paid to attend the university and play for them. So saying USC cheated I think isn't valid. USC would have loved to have had Reggie Bush back last year - they no doubt would have gotten to the BCS title game with him there.
Reggie Bush was also involved in a recruiting violation after he was drafted involving a phone call with a USC recruit. USC probably committs hundreds of small violations per year because they and everyone else know that the NCAA will not punish one of their cash cows for little shit.
> Will the ghost of Techman lead Nebraska's return to glory? Ah...nope! Mizzou, baby!!!!! > Will the Big XII North not suck? Well, it's all relative. It will "not suck" more than it didn't suck last year. But it will not suck less than the Big XII South will not suck.
Didn't we hear this in [-]2004[/-], [-]2005[/-], 2006... Transfer OSU, Tech, or A&M to the North for a year and you'd see them in the title game.
Actually Rhett was being paid by a booster for work he didn't do. There is no proof that the university had anything to do with it. So in reality that has a lot in common with a player signing with an agent. Granted Bush was smarter than Peterson, Reggie's folks got a house, all Adrian got was a lousy Lexus.
Nah, it's a different gig - Rhett got rewarded by a booster for going to the school the booster supported. Bush got rewarded for the intention of signing a contract to leave school early. In the first, OU gets a benefit for the actions of the player and booster. In the second, USC gets no benefit, perhaps even penalized, for a player to leave school to sign with that agent with a year left. Of course Bush was going to leave anyway, but it's not like someone was trying to help him stay at USC - they were trying to become his agent after he left school. I agree, it's not the way it's supposed to work, but it's not an example of USC trying to cheat.
But if he's taking benefits from an agent, that makes him a professional player at the collegiate level. Sounds like USC should either forfeit some games or join the NFL. Oh BTW, thanks for Moody, we'll give him a good home.
It's not a question of the school trying to cheat. If the player received benefits, from anyone, that he wouldn't have received if he wasn't a football player, then the player is ineligible. Schools are held accountable for this sort of thing, all the time. The school is penalized, even though the player has moved on. That's the way the NCAA works.
Here's a post on CBS sportsline that I read six months ago: So there has been a similar case to this at Florida, and neither those people nor the UofF was penalized. And in that case it included direct payments to the players that no one found out about until after the end of the season. Heard about the Mcknight phone call, though not of whether or not anything ever came of it. It seems unlikely even if there was direct proof on that matter it would be anything more than a slap on the wrist.
Though I can certainly understand why people would feel that it affected the competitive balance of the season and therefore USC should forfeit it's title. I don't agree, because that isn't what happened in the past, but I can understand the outlook.
I think people are writing off Florida too early but c'mon, Matt Flynn looks like he's going to do just fine, he of the 40-3 pasting of Miami two years ago. Of course, they have no depth there, and if he goes down, LSU drop a couple of games that they otherwise wouldn't. And that's all it takes. But barring injury, LSU should just sneak by Florida, who just has too many defensive players to replace.
Hell no! LOL. Hell no! But they may stop another team from getting theirs! Not Nebraska of the utter domination of the past, but Techman (and Bill Calahan) has them ready to start challenging the big teams of the Big 12 such as Texas and Oklahoma again. At Georgia? Not too damn likely. About week seven. My guess, Texas Tech. If Matt Flynn goes off on a stretcher, otherwise no. Nah, Satan inevitably collects. No freakin' way. Get back to me in 30 years and we'll talk. Not this year. It will hurt recruiting a bit - but not as much as losing to Boise State or being humiliated by Kansas State and USC a few years back did. Been over that. The championship is USC's to lose. Who cares? Hell of a lot more football out there than the Big Twelve. Damn straight!
I think the hype machine has been pimping LSU too much this year. I could see Auburn taking the West. Now as for the East, of course that's Florida. Tebow can throw all over the field, so you know how the Gator boys do it.
Not on this board, if the rest of you want to talk about your Div. II conferences, you need to get past the Tex/Ash/Flashlight/Flow/Techman () blockade.
At Florida At Arkansas At Georgia At LSU They can't make the road to National Champion easy can they?!?!
