Haven't you ever heard of the difference between an imperial gallon and a US gallon? One eighth of each is a pint, but an imperial pint is still larger than a US pint, by 25%.

Really, if everyone would just use liters it would all be so much simpler...

Yeah, but it sounds cooler ordering a pint than 567ml.

As a Londoner I will also use this opportunity to vent my irritatuion at the state of this city.

Public transport is a disgrace. The Mayor and Transport for London have made an insane amount of money over the past few years out of us passengers and what do we get? Bendy fucking buses, and nothing else. Tube and buses still packed to the rafters. Buses now cost TWO fucking QUID just to get onto! Where is all the money going? Maybe it's to fund the little shits who get on the bus for free of charge? Get these kids a schoolbus, why should fare payers fund free bus journeys for these kids, who do nothing but take up all seating space while those who actually pay to use the bus have to stand? I'm voting against Ken on that basis alone.

As for crime...the UK is a gangster's paradise since they can run rampant around here without ever having to fear a harsh sentence if by any chance they are arrested. Bring in a Saudi-style penal code for murderers, rapists, thugs and other assorted convicted scum and crime will quickly decrease. But most young criminals get a slap on the wrist, or an 'ASBO' if they're really lucky.

Immigration - this is Londonistan! Need anymore be said? Start regulating the number of migrants that come here otherwise we'll be seeing race riots that tend to occurr up norf. Maybe not allowing UNLIMITED number of migrants from poor EU countries to enter the country, let alone the capital would help to maintain some sort of equilibrium when it comes to the ethnic and cultural makeup of the city? :jayzus:

Got to disagree with that, imHo we are too harsh. We have the toughest sentances, the most laws that if broken end up in a penal sentence and by far the largest percentage of the population behind bars of all the countries in europe. All prison does is turn small criminals into bigger ones, it works if you need to send someone away for a looong time, but not for anything under 5 years or so

Bah. You Brits don't know from commutes. I can't tell you how many people I've known who spend years or decades commuting 3-5 hours round trip a day.

Used to leave the house at 7 am and get back at 9.30 pm.
On one particular day that's burned into my memory, I left the house at 7 am and got back 12.15 am the following day.
A colleague who lived a few stops further up the line got home at 2.15 am.
I'm telling you, it's just as well we aren't armed... ;)

I am a big supporter of the metric system but I will be damned if I am ever going to walk into a bar and ask for a liter of beer.

It is even more confusing here though, because the definition of pint actually varies from state to state!

Here in South Australia you have a schooner, then a pint (American size), or an imperial pint (English size in a knobbly glass)

In Queensland what they call a schooner is the size of a pint here, and what they call a pint is a proper imperial pint.

El Chup: Why don't you get out of London if you hate it that much?

I have to laugh at all those stories, there is plenty to be said for living in a city with a metropolitan population of just over a million. :) I feel hard pressed when I have to stand on the ten minute train ride home from the city.

Oh, thats right an Assie guy I used to message a lot told me about all the different kinds of drink glasses and what they are called down there between the different states. It sounded more confusing than the metric system.

Sad, but I can get it imported in bottles at a place here for less than that. Not just that Smithwicks crap either...

Well I grew up in and spent 25 years living in Hertfordshire so I'm familiar with communter belt. To be honest the reason I live in London at the moment is to make £££ on property, which I have so fair been doing, and also because other half is not yet ready to move into the upper clas chav areas.

Sorry, shouldn't the liberals be in here in a tizzy because several of Britforge said they are tired of immigration? LEGAL immigration, I might add?

You talk about enforcing immigration laws in the States, you are automatically deemed a racist.

You do it in the UK, you get a free pass.

Must be the accents, or the concept that they are more sophisticated so if they are complaining about immigration there must be some validity to it. :)

And yes, I feel the same way about Northern Virginia except for the public transit part - we barely have any of that, and when it's supposed to be extended to where half our population lives the politicos block it.

But sometime in the future I'm going to be living in a log cabin in the Rockies with a satellite dish and no fucking traffic. :)

Oh, just the highlights again for those not paying attention:
    And
Are we sure this is just hyperbole? Sounds like some pissed of Brits to me.

Or are we ignoring it under the 'angry white males open their mouth but no one listens to the sounds they make' rule?

This was such a good thread before people started yelling 'racism.' Sigh...

I thought the trains ran on time in Britain. Isn't that your big thing? If they aren't, it must mean Voldemort is coming. Or somesuch other very bad thing.

The exact opposite, our trains are famous for always being late.
Transport on mainland europe is famous for always being on time

Please tell me master mind how i'm meant to get the attachment to work when it's something in the board software?

Didn't use any image link, i try not too leech from other peoples sites.

Well guess it stops you going hysterical when one person makes a remark you don't like then saying everyone said it.

Actually, my point wasn't that I found the remarks by El Chup and Camren racist.

I found it interesting that other people didn't remark on the comments as racist, because if an american had said shit like that certainly someone would have called them on it.

It's ignored in a thread about London.

I find that interesting, and was hoping to provoke comment.

Obviously, what I provoked was less than scintillating. LOL.

Oh, it's just hyperbole when one of the blokes says it....

Teasing you about not being able to post your image calling me a dumbass so it would show was just a bonus.

And then the negs started to fly...

The LIRR claims a train is "on time" when it comes in less than 6 minutes after its scheduled arrival time. Lately they're claiming up to 90% of trains arrive "on time".

The trains in Europe may be bad, but they're not that bad, even in the UK.

Actually, our trains are allowed to claim they're 'on time' when they arrive up to 10 minutes late.

When I first moved to Colchester, the scheduled journey time for the eeeevil nationalised railway to get me to London was 50 minutes, which meant anything more than an hour counted as late.
The wonderful, updated, privatised railway is now scheduled to get us to London in one hour and five minutes, meaning anything up to an hour and a quarter counts as on time. :garamet:

Demi, El Chup's rant was against 'foreigners' not 'migrants'. Could make a lot of difference in a city that gets as many tourists and temporary visitors as London does.
And if you could get your head out of your arse for a moment, you'd notice that there's a thread in the Help Desk from a couple of days ago asking why some attachments don't show at the moment, started by Forbin, which explains exactly why Darkening's pic didn't show. But carrying on displaying your ignorance of board technical matters if it makes you feel big.

We DO NOT have the toughest sentencing by any means. Perhaps we are reasonably strict by continental standards, but certainly not by international standards.
